5 Must-See Acts at Subsonic 2015
Since 2008, Subsonic festival has been treating us to an eclectic lineup of the most exciting and cutting-edge artists on the dub, techno and hip-hop scene, and 2015 is no different. Check out our guide to the 5 must see acts at this year’s three day celebration of underground music.
Maayan Nadim
Hailing from Tel Aviv, Maayan Nidam began DJing in 1999 and travelled the world before settling in Berlin, a city renowned for its underground party scene. Her house and techno beats have been released on labels from Raum Musik to Freak n Chic and found their way into regular features at some of Europe’s biggest clubs and events. Today she can be found mixing funky rhythms with trippy, warped vocals under the aliases of Laverne Radix and Miss Fitz.
The Opiou Band
Having sold out venues across the globe, reaching #1 chart positions on Beatport, Addictech, and iTunes and working with the likes of MC Hammer, it’s safe to say New Zealand native Opiou knows a thing or two about funk. He has played at some of the world’s most renowned festivals and shared the stage with the likes of Moby and Bonobo, to name but a few.
Kowton
Kowton has been steadily making a name for himself over the past few years from his base in Bristol’s Idle Hands vinyl record store. As one third of Livity Sound, alongside collaborators Peverelist and Asusu, Kowton creates experimental techno beats that are sure to fill a dance floor. Check out Glock and Roll, released on The Young Turks offshoot label Whities.

dOP
Featuring on Resident Advisors top live acts for three consecutive years is no mean feat, but something that has been achieved by French trio Damien Vandesande, Clément Aichelbaum and Jonathan Illel under the moniker dOP. The three childhood friends began creating electronic music five years ago and have since released EPs on numerous labels including Circus Company and performed around the world. Their 2014 single ‘Close up’ combines deep chords with sultry vocals, making for excellent listening – see for yourself below.
Flugel
Flugel’s career began when his elder brother gave him a compliation of Chicago House which was to inspire his love for electronic music. With a job description boasting not only DJ and producer, but also label co-owner, Flugel has his work cut out. His combination of deep house and quirky techno rhythms and remixes of artists from Daft Punk to Kylie Minogue have made him one of the biggest names on the German electronic music scene. Check out Wilkie from his 2014 album Happiness is Happening.
