A New Year Resolution: Come And Teach in Australia!

Follow us on Google News

Thinking of a New Year Resolution, why not make it to come and teach in Australia! If you’ve ever travelled to the land down under, you’ll know that the people of Australia are a pretty laid back species. What with the seemingly endless sunshine, amazing beaches and great opportunities it’s hard not to be! Now, imagine working in an environment like this. If you’re a teacher in the UK looking for a lifestyle change, look no further than Australia for your next destination. Say goodbye to rainy mornings and little work life balance and welcome excellent job opportunities and great rates of pay – who knows, you might even take up surfing!

Why emigrate to work as a teacher in Australia?

One of the biggest draws is the lifestyle. The sunny weather (which is fairly constant all year round depending on where you decide to relocate to) allows for much more time spent in the great outdoors. From water sports to hiking, there are many fun, exciting ways to keep fit which may not be accessible in the UK. There is also the draw of the cities; from the endless entertainment opportunities of Sydney to the gastronomic and shopping delights of Melbourne, every city has its own unique charm, and you’re sure to find interesting ways to occupy your time.

What Visa and Qualifications Do You Need to Teach in Australia?

Finding a job in Australia may seem like a daunting job, but it need not once you know the steps you need to take. First is the matter of Visas; if you’re under 30, a Working Holiday Visa may suffice, but we aware that these only allow you in the country for a maximum of 12 months. Alternatively, you may be required to enter Australia as a skilled migrant or on a state sponsored visa. In terms of the qualifications necessary, you’d need a university or college teaching qualification, such as an undergraduate professional degree or PGCE that is recognised by the Australian Government. You’d also need to meet all English language requirements, which may mean taking an IELTS test or equivalent English Language test. Don’t let these steps put you off – if you’re already working as a teacher in the UK it’s very likely you already fill these criteria.

Where Should You Go?

Although the cosmopolitan lifestyle may initially draw you, it’s worth looking to more remote areas, such as the Northern Territory, for job opportunities as this is where there is a shortage. If you can’t resist the big lights of a city, it is perhaps best to become a casual teacher first and work your way up. If you need help working out where to relocate to, Smart Teachers can assist; they hire for a ‘wide range of roles […] in independent schools across your local state and nationally.’ They let ‘you set the parameters on where you’d like to work, and in what capacity’, giving you complete freedom of choice.
