A Tasty Winter Wrap
City of Perth Winter Arts Season 2012 is sadly coming to an end, and wraps up on the 31st of this month. So to keep you all artistically and culturally occupied we’ve found you plenty of opportunities to feast your senses on colourful art and culture offerings, many continuing into spring.
For the City of Perth temporary gallery project Canvas Co-op, the final week will showcase a brand new shipment of stellar contemporary and pop art from Outre Gallery, 10-6pm Tuesday – Friday, at 192 William Street Northbridge.
Foodies and arts lovers will unite at the final instalment of Winter Supper Club on Friday, 5-8pm, when the Perth Town Hall undercroft will be filled with local vendors serving up international hot food delights like paella, bratwurst, crepes, churros, goulash pies, traditional German gugelhopf (chocolate bread), mulled wine, and handmade chocolate truffles.
This month’s Supper Club entertainment is provided by Harry’s Shiraz Cabaret, featuring singing swingabilly sensation Harry Deluxe; and the Von Trapp-esque Eight Dalys, a violin ensemble of six super talented young siblings.
The MoveMe Dance Festival will dominate the performance component of the Winter Arts Season’s final week, seeing Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion return to Perth to open the festival on Tuesday with Cheap Lecture & The Cow Piece at PICA.
Other shows in the Festival include Faun and Harakiri and tiny little tragedies, presented by STRUT Dance at the State Theatre Centre of WA; Life in Miniature – Anything is Valid Dance Theatre’s performance for 5 audience members at a time – inside a caravan outside PICA; and the Australian Dance Awards in Perth for the very first time.
Musically speaking, free lunchtime concerts by WAAPA Music students continue Friday at the State Library; St George’s Cathedral welcomes concert organist Dr John Scott, former Director of Music at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, for a one night only performance; and WASO presents Arabian Nights at Perth Concert Hall, exotic melodies by world-renowned pianist Stephen Hough.
It’s your last chance this week to catch family event The Gruffalo’s Child, a live stage production of the children’s storybook, while Explore-a-saurus runs at Scitech until 21 October and the Perth Cultural Centre Screen’s Umbrella Screenings continue at noon, 1pm and 6pm: Tuesday Talks; Wednesday’s World of Animation; and International Drama and Docos on Thursdays.
Visual art exhibitions see the Winter Arts Season through to spring, at the Art Gallery of WA, Venn Gallery, UWA’s Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, and continuing 24/7 is the mural by Kyle Hughes Odgers with illuminated 3D prints in Northbridge’s Lock Lane thanks to the City of Perth’s youth projects arm, Foodchain.
Although the seasons may be changing, one thing remains the same: the place to get your fill of arts and culture year-round is Perth!
