B.Miles Interview
B.Miles has been our one to watch for a few months now due to her incredible vocal range and creative productions, so naturally we couldn’t wait to interview her! Here, she discusses being pigeon-holed, her musical heroes and her track of the moment.
You’ve been classed as a dark-pop artist. How do you feel about that? Do you think it fits your musical style?
I definitely feel that it fits for right now, but I don’t want to pigeon hole myself as an artist. I think it’s so important to constantly challenge yourself creatively. But as long as it helps you guys classify me, I’m fine with it.
We love your soaring warm and magnetic vocals in your music. Is your aim to stick to producing melancholy sultry sounds or would you ever consider genre switching?
Thank you so much. I’m always up for changing my music and trying different things. My songwriting partner, Eric Nizgretsky, and I have recently been really focusing on complicating the sound, just cause it keeps making music exciting and interesting.
You’ve been compared to artists like London Grammar. Who are your musical heroes? Would you like to work with any of them?
Vocally, my musical hero is Amy Winehouse. She was the first badass that I saw and she kind of taught me how to have an edge. Songwriting wise, I am obsessed with Jai Paul, he is an absolute musical genius. If Jai Paul called to collaborate I would drop everything I am doing to go work with him.
BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens played your third single Salt on his show recently, you must have been so hyped! How do you feel getting so much praise on your music?
I was ecstatic! I couldn’t believe it. I had my entire family in London and all of my friends there make sure to listen. I’m just so in awe with the amount of success these songs are having. It makes me so happy that people love these songs.
You’ve achieved incredible success with ‘Nine Matches’, ‘Shaking Hands’ and the new release ‘Salt’, which we absolutely adore. What does the rest of the year look like for you? Any tours planned?
I’m actually currently in New York working in the studio. I’ve been working real hard with Eric Nizgretsky and Noise Club so we will see what comes out of it. Maybe a tour will happen, maybe it won’t…
What’s one track at the moment you can’t live without?
Tough question, but maybe ‘The Less I Know the Better’ by Tame Impala. It’s honestly just a hot track.
‘Salt’ has also made it on to Spotify’s viral hits list. Where do you see yourself this time next year?
Hopefully doing the same thing. I’d love to see more B.Miles tracks hitting the viral hits list. It feels good to see people digging my tracks.
What’s your inspiration behind your raw and honest songwriting? Do you use personal experience to motivate your ideas?
Personal experience is where almost all of the lyrical content comes from. Sometimes it’s hard for me to let it out, but Eric does a pretty incredible job of extracting it from me. His motto is the more real you are, the more people will relate to what you’re saying. I’ve kind of learned to live like that.
