Band of the Week: Oliver Tank
Sorry, who?
Ok, so we’ve bended the rules this week just a little to bring you a solo effort in the form of super lovely Sydney boy, Oliver Tank. He’s been posting what can only be described as cosmic awesomeness via his soundcloud since mid-2011 and has been quietly making a name for himself ever since, winning the 2011 Northern Lights competition held by Sydney-based FBi Radio. Today he has an impressive 18,881 likes on Facebook, as well as 10,597 followers on his soundcloud page (social networking is everything, people). We just don’t know why this guy hasn’t hit the mega big-time yet… everyone needs to know how great he is!
What does he sound like?
He’s been dubbed the ‘Australian James Blake’ quite a bit and it’s very easy to see why; their songs both share that cool ambient quality. Tank’s offerings are perhaps more beautiful though, listening to his tracks is like swimming through a lagoon of choral tropical fish. Possibly the weirdest metaphor we’ve ever used to describe someone’s music but you have to listen, you really do. There’s this crazy ‘underwater’ effect to everything he produces which is pretty breathtaking. If you’re having trouble switching off or unwinding, Oliver Tank provides the musical version of the most soothing bubble bath you’ve ever had the pleasure of taking.
What should I listen to?
If you pre-order Oliver’s new EP, ‘Slow Motion Music’, on iTunes you’ll receive his latest track, ‘Different Speed’, instantly. It’s a vocoded masterpiece and showcases his nifty little collaboration with Perth producer, Ta-ku, quite brilliantly. Listen to ‘Different Speed’ below:
If you want to hear the song that had us falling in love with this Sydney babe though, then you must listen to ‘Help You Breathe’. It’s the most deliciously romantic love song you’re likely to hear for a while and that accolade is not given out too freely, trust us on this one. With a chorus line oozing out “music is like air to me and I just want to help you breathe”, prepare to melt into a little puddle on the ground. It’s not likely to disappoint.
