Band of the Week: Superfood
Sorry, who?
Teen Britpop-sters, Superfood, are this week’s offering! Birmingham sure is spitting out some decent music ensembles of late. This lot follow in the footsteps of indie sensations Peace and come highly recommended by the quirky (and a little bit weird) boys of Swim Deep.
The four-piece (three guys, one gal) sing angsty but undeniably groovy tunes about the state of the world for ‘yoofs’ just like them and accompany their growls with tasty basslines, thrashing guitar riffs and some seriously sweet hooks. They’re still relatively unknown but are garnering popularity quickly so catch ’em while you can at a seedy venue near you.
What do they sound like?
A slightly more aggressive Blur with a little bit of Feeder mixed in. Listening to them sort of makes you feel all nostalgic for the late 90’s boom of decent Britpop.
They’re undeniably cooler than the likes of Damian or Noel though, perhaps a little more hipster one might say. There’s nothing wrong with hipster when it sounds and looks like this though.
If you want to get your groove on, go to a Superfood gig. There’s just the right amount of ‘catchy’ to satisfy the modest ‘bopper’ and plenty of heavy guitar moments to pogo around to if you’re that way inclined. Bring a safety helmet if you’re going to get dragged into the mosh pit that inevitably forms at the front though. It could get messy.
What Should You Listen To?
‘TV’ sums up pretty nicely all that Superfood are. It’s quite raw in terms of sound but satisfyingly so. It’s definitely a good introduction to their stuff in any case.
If you want head-nodding, stuck-in-your-brain catchiness though try ‘Superfood’, a self-titled track that will have you crooning out the chorus for days.
