The Penny Black
If you want a warm roast with some live music, try Penny Black. On a Sunday, they offer their roast of the day for $12, served with all the trimmings. Bridie O’Reilly’s serve a traditional roast dinner all day on a Sunday, from lunchtime until 9pm, so even if you decide at the last minute that you want to abandon your pasta and have a taste from home, you’ll still get served. They offer two different roasts for $20 each, and you have a choice of a free pot of James Squire or glass of wine with your food. Middle Park Hotel
Looking to stay inside and well fed during the rubbish weather? The Middle Park Hotel’s belly-warming roast is a real treat. If you’ve become a bit tired of the standard roast dinner and want to try something a bit more adventurous, then come here. Their roast is available on Saturdays and Sundays and features rare breeds, including Charolais & Black Angus beef, Large Black & Tamworth pork, Dorset Downs Salt Marsh lamb, Macleay Valley rabbit and Thirlmere ducks. Sound good? You can get a roast here with pudding for $55, or include a boutique beer or local wine for an extra $15. If you’re cold and hungry, follow your eyes and nose and end up in the aptly named, The Roast Kitchen. The best roast in Melbourne… or it’s free! Apparently… This little gem in Kew is a winner when it comes to a superb winter menu. For $19.50 (or $27 if you want to go large), it’s great value too. Beef, pork, lamb, chicken; this place has a range of meats for you to choose from all served with steamed vegetables, roast potatoes, and their very own red wine gravy. There’s also a vegetarian option and you can eat in or take away. And if that wasn’t enough, it has a BYO policy. So, when are you going?
