DIBP’s Interesting Statistics The Department of Immigration and Border Protection has come out with a report that contains recent migration numbers for the Financial Year 2015 to 2016.

It is indicated in the report that there were a total of 7.7 million temporary visas which were granted to foreign nationals, and almost 2 million temporary visitors were citizens of New Zealand travelling on Special Category 444 visas. The breakdown of the details for each visa subclass are as follows:

  • Temporary visas granted: More than 7.7 million
  • Visitor visas granted: 4.8 million
  • Student visas granted (this includes student guardians): 310,845
  • Working Holiday Maker visas granted: 214,583
  • Special Category (subclass 444) visas granted: 1.9 million
  • Maritime Crew and Transit visas granted: 345,873
  • Temporary Work (skilled) (subclass 457) visas granted: 85 611
  • Temporary residents (other) visas granted: 130,807

With regard to permanent residency, the numbers are looking to be a lot lower with just 190,000 permanent visas granted. Apart from that, there are 133,000 individuals who became citizens of Australia.

Humanitarian intake has remained the same with the numbers at 19,000.

The report has also put bold emphasis on sanctions and compliance. While it is indicated in the report that there are over 99 per cent of foreign nationals who maintained their lawful status (this is most impressive if you compare it to other foreign jurisdictions such as the United States of America where the number of unlawful non citizens is at present an unknown number), there were a number of issued compliance and sanction notices. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection has specifically issued 414 illegal worker notifications and has removed nearly 15 000 unlawful non citizens from the country, according to the report.

The number of individuals who are in detention at present is at 2 200, and the number of conducted patrols at wharves, seaports, as well as waterfront environments and its surrounding areas, including remote and coastal regions is at 4 737.

The section of the report that deal with Border Management has also given some pretty admirable data. Processed international air and sea travellers is at 40.68 million.

International mail items that are inspected on a daily basis is at 57.3 million with a total number of 37 936 instances that illicit drugs at the border have been detected.

For the recent financial year, staff at the Immigration Department is at 15 432, indicating that it has gone down from the previous report.

It is going to be interesting to know what they will provide in their subsequent reports looking ahead, which are going to be published in the new financial year.

While the temporary and permanent migration numbers are predicted to remain steady, there certainly are changes to be expected to the humanitarian intake, as well as the staff levels of the Immigration Department.
