Does It Offend You Yeah?

does it offend you yeah

After a public dispute with their record label, the gang from Does It Offend You, Yeah? Are back to play Splendour sideshows in Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. Moments before BBM Live’s BEN HARLUM called Dan Coop, the power went out in his suburb. We pick up the conversation there.

It’s a bit weird sitting here in the darkness so bear with me.

Weird. It’s not a sign of an alien invasion is it? A Zombie attack?

If I start screaming can you try and call the Australian authorities?

Yeah, will do. I’ll send the army for you.

Sounds good. At least you’ll have an interesting audience of zombies when you come down in August.

That’d be amazing actually; I think that’d be the gig to end all gigs. Turn into a zombie at the end, you know?

Now that’d be fun. Now, after all the controversy with the record label, have you found that balance between commercial success and creating the music you want to create?

I’d say we have, but I don’t really care about it to be honest. I just want to do the music that we want to do, so as long as we can play music we like to people well then I’m not too bothered.

Oh, see now I’ve got a massive yellow construction truck coming down my road. I don’t know what’s going on, this must be a government conspiracy going down.

It’s definitely a conspiracy organised by the Commonwealth.

Next you’ll have Scully and Mulder from the X-Files turning up at your house…

How has the tour gone down in Europe, you’re obviously test driving things for your Australian round?

Yeah, definitely. We did a big run in Germany, France, Belgium, we even went to eastern Europe… god, pretty much everywhere. It’s been really busy promoting the album and playing the music but I hope they’ve liked it.

In LA, James broke his leg, you also exploded a microwave while recording the album, is there a limit to the amount of violence you can achieve to get the right sound and performance?

Well it’s more drunken antics than violence, you know. I’d like to set that microwave story straight, actually. We were recording vocals in my dad’s kitchen, and James and I went to make a sandwich, put something in the microwave and it blew up. Luckily we were recording, it sounded great so we used it.

You just need to make sure, if you’re playing for an Australian crowd of zombies, that there’s no blood and guts because they’ll pounce.

[Laughs] I’m gonna start carrying around a weapon. I’ll have to use my keyboard stand…

Check back over the next few weeks for more music info, interviews and competitions here on BBM Live.
