Kirribilli
- Project: New Residence
- Architect: Luigi Rosselli Architects
- Style: Modern
- Floor Area: 572sqm
This impressive three-storey home cleverly takes advantage of a steeply sloping site and absolute waterfront position.
A series of rammed earth blades rising up to 6.5m high form the external elevations of the house and double as feature walls of the interior, where the earthy red tones marry with recycled red ironbark timber flooring to create a natural and warm ambience throughout the residence.
The structure is completed with a unique curved metal roof and expansive floor-to-ceiling single-pane glass windows which bathe the interior in natural light whilst capitalizing on the home’s impressive water views.
Privacy and functionality also feature prominently in the home’s design and construction. A central courtyard provides a comfortable and private external space, and a series of motorized retractable venetians provide shading and privacy for the home’s interiors. Extensive use of joinery creates functional storage space and an internal passenger lift enables free and easy access between the three levels.

Hunters Hill
- Project: Hunters Hill
- Architect: Lesiuk Architects & Alwill Design
- Style: Contemporary
- Construction Awards: 2009 HIA CSR NSW Housing Awards Winner for CSR NSW Home of the Year, Renovation & Additions Project of the Year; and Renovation & Additions Project $600,000+
- 2009 Master Builders Association NSW awards for: House Alterations/Additions/Renovations, Environmental Management – Housing and Traditional or Geometric Concrete Pools
This sprawling Hunters Hill mansion is the perfect marriage of heritage architecture and modern design. The simplicity of the home’s open plan layout and finishes create a sophisticated but relaxed ambience and mask the complexity of its construction and intensive detail.
The basement level, accommodating a spacious study, was excavated through rock whilst the original sandstone and brick home was suspended above. A complex new steel structured wing with a myriad of interconnecting pieces and integrated windows, louvers and skylights was constructed to replace a previous extension, and the existing pool was demolished to make way for a new detached guest house with a wall of operable panels and suspended pool.
Equally impressive are the services hidden within the building’s fabric that ensure this home is not only comfortable but also energy efficient and environmentally sustainable. A sophisticated 3-point water management system has been installed to capture stormwater for landscape irrigation, grey-water for reuse in toilets and provision for future black-water treatment and recycling. Further, the home actively generates clean energy through roof top photovoltaic cells whilst consciously minimising energy consumption via low voltage dimmable lighting and a reliance on natural gas to power the home’s hydronic floor heating, pool heater, water heaters and cooking appliances. Finally, passive design elements such as a north facing orientation, generous eaves, cross ventilation and wall, floor and ceiling insulation complete this home’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Internally the home is finished with a simple suite of finishes including polished concrete, timber strip flooring, corian and mirrored walls. Extensive joinery installations in a range of colours add to the home’s functionality whilst the internal custom built steel stair case with its electrostatic paint finish and unique floor-to-ceiling rod balustrade create a dramatic link between the three levels.
Externally, extensive use of sandstone cladding and paving pay homage to the heritage status of the original house and the stained timber eaves create a soft link between the old and new. Huge steel framed windows, frameless glass louvers and strategically placed skylights ensure the home is bathed in natural light whilst the new pool, deck and pergola create a comfortable external playground overlooking the surrounding landscape.

Tamarama
- Project: Tamarama
- Architect: Wittenoom Louw Architects
- Style: Modern
This four-storey mansion was architecturally designed to maximize views of Tamarama beach and create a luxurious yet functional home.
The ground level is dominated by a large garage cut into the steeply sloping site. The garage opens to the street frontage through cedar paneled garage doors which in turn are surrounded by random pattern sandstone cladding.
The remaining levels include five bedrooms, a study, gym, billiard room, piano room, cellar, two living areas, numerous bathrooms and a mosaic tiled swimming pool with feature pool window. Each area boasts exclusive finishes including floor-to-ceiling slab marble walls laid in book match to the master-bedroom ensuite, Western Queensland Spotted Gum timber flooring to the living areas and a state-of-the-art polyurethane kitchen with marble bench-top and European appliances.
The living areas are arranged in an open plan and linked with external terraces through bi-fold doors that invite the outside in. Planter boxes, frameless glass balustrades and Grecian columns add to the ambience of the external terrace areas while operable pergolas with integrated heating panels ensure maximum comfort all year round.
The home also features extensive specialist electrical and audio visual installations including CBUS, Ipod docking stations and integrated speakers throughout. Other ‘hidden’ features include rainwater collection tanks, a water recycling system and solar pool heating which ensure this truly modern home achieves an environmentally sustainable outcome.
