As the water sport capital of the world, Australia boasts a surf, snorkel and jet ski culture that you can’t ignore. And why would you want to? With its coastline, sparkling lakes and winding rivers, it’s the perfect place to try your hand at something new or challenge your skills.
125 miles south of Sydney is Shoalhaven Heads, a coastal city surrounded by ocean and parkland. The most southern stop for the South Coast train line, the picturesque rail route takes just two-and-a-half hours from Sydney and brings to a world of adventure. This is where you’ll find Free Motion Sports, a company that takes advantage of the landscape. Embarking from Grey’s Beach on the Shoalhaven River, the impressive Malibu Wakesetter VLX takes you out for a ride to remember, whether you opt for waterskiing, wakeboarding or wakesurfing. If you’re not familiar with some of these thrilling experiences, read on.
One of the first ways to ride on water, waterskiing is still one of the best. With options of single or double skis, try to stand for as long as possible and feel the water spray as you zip along the river.
Learn as a beginner and you can soon become skilled in wakeboarding. Free Motion Sports can get you standing with the help of their state-of-the-art helmets, so you can receive tips and tricks from the professionals as you ride. Once you’re at standing level, you can progress onto jumps, 180degree spins and even flips.
If you think you’ve got skills in surfing, or want to try your hand at it, you can feel the rush of an endless wave wakesurfing. With this adrenaline sport, you don’t need to rely on the right tide, swell direction, or offshore/onshore winds, as the boat creates the wave. The more friends you bring with you for the ride, the heavier the boat and the bigger the wave.
If you prefer your feet firmly on solid ground, Free Motion Sports also organise trekking tours that will take you to undisturbed areas of Shoalhaven and surroundings. Look out over Jervis Bay and Kangaroo Valley on the lush walk in the Barren Grounds Natural Reserve, take in the breathtaking view of the Tasman Sea from Beecroft Peninsula, or climb to the top of Pulpit Rock. Walks range from an easy hour and a half to a more challenging five hours, but all offer spectacular experiences of Australia’s formation and landscape.
The water sports can be arranged for individuals or groups, with gift packages available at $425pp including introduction and experience. Group bookings are dependent on the time on the water, with $160 per hour for three hours, $140 per hour for five hours, and $120 per hour for eight hours, with group size recommendations included. If you like a discount, weekday group bookings come with 25% off the weekend price. Prices include equipment, coaching and tuition.
With exciting water sports in the safety of Shoalhaven River, a determination to convince anyone to give it a go and the inclusion of abseiling courses in the not too distant future, Free Motion Sports are the adrenalin experts we suggest you check out soon.
