I, A Man
I, a Man’s Dan Moss has been chasing the musical dream in various different outfits. However, he knew his luck was in when his childhood pal Ash Hunter returned from the wilderness – ok, so Perth. With a mutual goal, he realised that chasing a dream with someone who understands you is better than someone who simply shares a dream. With a back log of material that needed exploration, he and Hunter set straight to work. Before long they had also recruited good friends Erik Rene and Sumner Fish and I, A Man was formed.
“I think that (on) this first EP we are still discovering it a little bit so its probably more diverse than it might be next time around.” Though the quartet have just released their stunning debut EP “Fifteen Thirty Three”, Moss admits that they feel their sound is as yet not fully defined. In grouping together they all bring different ingredients and influences to the table and as I, A Man progresses they realise that their own sound will become increasingly distinct and individual.
However, they are no longer in first base. The band dynamic could not be stronger and the creative juices have not ceased to flow. With “Fifteen Thirty Three” serving as little more than an introduction, Moss is already able to point to their emerging sound signature. “I guess our sound is very rhythmic and melodic but our approach to writing is very much focused on texture and atmosphere.”
With the band rapidly building a fanbase on the live circuit, Moss realises that it is partly audience response and partly practice that is helping them fine tune exactly who and what I, Am Man are. While contemplating their recent live shows, he realaises, “”I guess another thing that we get a lot is that we are quite spacial within it all as well if that makes sense.”
Though the band ” never sat down and said we should be this kind of band or that kind of band,” having now firmly secured their foundations, he admits that they now discuss more freely influences and direction. Rather than being just two lifelong pals playing for fun, I, A Man has become a dynamic quartet with intent and goal.
