Interview With Young Franco At Chase The Beat BBMlive.com recently caught up with Brisbane-born DJ & producer Young Franco at our monthly club night ‘Chase The Beat‘ at London’s Magic Roundabout.
Young Franco’s latest release ‘Drop Your Love’ is a track which makes your hairs stand on end, as an uncontrollable nod of the head takes effect. An avid hip-hop fan from his early teens, you can clearly hear this has inspired his music production along with garage and house from more recent years. Young Franco has been on a summer tour, and is now focusing on his next release. We caught up with him to find out more…
So how are you finding playing here in the UK different to how you find playing back at home, on your home turf?
I think it’s a different dynamic. I think there are things that are great about Australian crowds and there’s also things that are great about UK and European crowds. I think I’m still trying to work out the best way to go about my sets and I’m still trying to find my feet.
Do you find that the same track brings out a different reaction in the crowd?
Absolutely. People who live in Australia are used to a certain type of music and in the UK, it’s a lot more techno and a lot more established than Australia is.
So your new single ‘Drop Your Love’ is out now. Correct?
Yeah.
Tell us what was the inspiration behind the track, what was the reason for making the tune?
There wasn’t any real inspiration. I was just writing a lot of music and this one was one of the ones that I liked the most.
Was it one of the tracks that you found one of the easiest to make?
Sometimes. The start was quite easy. I probably did it in two real goes with the extra production and then it took a lot of time to find the right vocalist and tweak it and stuff.
The melody came first…
Yes, I wrote all the production and then they wrote the vocals.
We’re coming towards the end of summer unfortunately here in the UK. Lucky for you your summer is about to kick off over in Oz.
What have you been doing for the UK summer?
Well I’ve only been here since Friday so we went down to Cornwall and went to the beach. That was beautiful. Really good weather.
People forget that we actually have decent beaches in the UK.
Yeah. You have a beach and you have blue sky.
Maybe just the one….
Yeah, maybe one and a half. No, it was beautiful.

You went to Cornwall for Boardmasters. Is that one of the coolest festivals you’ve played at? How did it compare to other festivals?
It’s very similar the Splendour in the Grass. It’s incredible, beautiful beaches, the weather’s good. There’s farmland and rolling hills. But there’s nothing like Boardmasters. What’s nice is that every single festival has their own thing going on.
So back in Brisbane, as you were growing up, who would you say was the reason why you got into music? Was there someone or was it more a genre of music?
I think it was myself. I think I got into music because I like hip-hop and I like sampling and DJing and just was into everything, every source of information I could get as a young person in Australia. I never really had a point where it was like ‘I’m going to do this.’
Your music is what I like to call, a “goosepimpler”. It has a lot of depth to it musically, do you build your sets as you do your production? Just roll with it, or do you have it a lot more thought out and planned?
I mainly choose a beginning song and then see what the vibe of the crowd is.
Your music has got a little bit of a garage tinge to it. Would you say that there’s a garage tone?
Yes, I love garage.
But in Oz, is Garage popular as it is in the UK?
No, it really isn’t. I’d say our biggest recent garage influence is kind of Disclosure, although they’re still quite housey.
So, where are you off to next?
I’m staying in London for a bit. Then onto Paris. I might be doing a show. I’m just trying to take time off too. I’m writing a lot.
And in terms of releases, do you have any other releases coming out soon?
Well I just re-released the remix pack for ‘Drop Your Love’ and now working on some new material.
