Maduk Interview
Maduk continues to go from strength to strength. From curating the hugely popular night, Liquicity, to signing to Hospital Records and releasing his first full length record. We chatted to Maduk before he embarks on a two week tour with Hospitality.
Hey Maduk, thanks for talking to us!
Hey man, Good thanks and no worries
Let’s start with the new album, what inspired Never Give Up?
When I started listening to Drum ‘n’ Bass six or so years ago, I would be riding on my bike through the city and listening to some tracks and it really energised me and gave me a feeling that no other music gave me. The natural speed and energy combined with the vocals and harmonics really works for me. So from the start I tried to achieve that same feeling in my own music. Every track I made I would see myself riding my bike through the city the same way I did before.
That’s really cool. Do think that’s translated into your music?
Well, funnily enough, so many people contact me every day telling me they get exactly that feeling from my music without me every saying it. Which is great to see because it means the main thing I put behind the music actually gets delivered.
Holland has always been known as having a big EDM scene but recently there seems to be a big push of liquid Drum ‘n’ Bass coming out of there?
I think it’s something from the past few years to be honest. Before me and the liquid era, there was just Lenzman. But we’ve really seen in the past few years the scene in Holland, especially the liquid side, get a real boost. Young talent is popping out everywhere, like NCT and T & Sugah and a lot of young guys starting to produce music suddenly. Which is great in my opinion. We’ve been doing the Liquicity shows now for three and a half years. I think it’s helped to inspire those new producers. They would be at these parties and see the crowd go completely nuts.
What are the crowds like in Holland?
It’s no nonsense. They come in when the party starts at 10pm and they leave when the party ends at 6am and they rave all night. There is no ‘how do I look?’ and no bullshit. It’s a great vibe.
How would you compare that to the UK crowd?
I think the UK crowd is pretty good as well. I think that because the scene is smaller in Holland, everyone is there for the music. Whereas in the UK, it can be a little mixed. There are some people who come for the music and some people who are just on a night out. But the Hospitality events are always really good.
What’s it like touring with those guys?
Well, it feels very natural to be honest. I haven’t been touring with them for a period of time yet, like the two weeks in Australia we’re about to do. But when I see them at shows across Europe, each and every one of them is very nice and friendly. I knew a lot of them before I signed to Hospital so that helped. It really is a family. There’s no friction. Just like touring with your mates really.
