More than 50 occupations could be removed from SOL
More than 50 occupations could possibly be taken out of the country’s Skilled Occupation List, the list which identifies the needed occupations necessary for immigration to Australia, and a compilation of all the occupations necessary for skilled migration so that the medium to long-term needs of the country, with regard to skills, could be met for the growth of the country’s economy.
All in all, there are 52 occupations which have been flagged on the 2016 – 2017 Skilled Occupation List, these include health professionals and specialists, barristers, engineers, taxation accountants, and solicitors, just to name a few.
41 jobs are being pushed by the federal health department to be removed from the list, this includes general practitioners, anaesthetists, and surgeons, stated in a report released by The Australian.
”Immigration is often used as a short-term demand management strategy and it continues to be poorly co-ordinated,” reads a submission by the Health Department into the review of the Skilled Operations List.
”Over a longer planning horizon,” it also stated, ”Better management of migration pathways for international health professionals must occur in combination with all commonwealth departments”
The change is going to be evened out by the increase in the number of local medical graduates who are expected to fill the shortages, particularly in the regional areas.
The minister of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection was given advice by the Department of Education and Training regarding the SOL’s composition.
Every year, the DIBP is the one that undertakes the SOL review after which there are a number of jobs that have been ”flagged” for possibly being removed from the list in the future. Occupations are, in general, flagged when there is sufficient evidence that it has plenty of supply in the labour market.
