With great dance floor tracks in ‘Everybody Together’ and ‘Gonna Get Better’, Nicky Night Time is one of the finest local songwriters and producers in Sydney. His previous success as one-quarter of  Van She promised big things, and as a result, he’s made a name for himself both in Australia and further afield. While on his Australian tour, we caught up with Nicky to find out about his plans for a debut album, visits to the UK and USA and his Bondi Beach lifestyle.

Travel to Western Australia

Hi Nicky! After the massive success of ‘Everybody Together’, how did you feel when releasing follow-up ‘Gonna Get Better’?
I never thought Everybody Together was going to be a success so I just feel blessed that I can actually release more records as Nicky Night Time.

It’s such a huge dance floor track, and the arrangement sounds so catchy and familiar, like it should have existed already; what inspires and influences your production?
Wow, that’s a great compliment. I think singers, tone and mood mixed in with a bit of nostalgia inspires me. I guess when I make music I think about what I would like to hear in a club, and how can I make a track to project me there when I’m listening back to the track in my house. Production-wise, I come from making band records and mixing on consoles, so I have quite a high standard when it comes to sound value and mixing techniques. I guess one of my favourite mixers is Zdar as he uses gear on his records I can only dream about.

You’ve been on the Gonna Get Better Tour since February; how is it going? Are the crowds embracing the Nicky Night Time sound?
Yeah I think people who love house music will get it and at the end of the day I guess they do. I’m really only doing this for selfish reasons so when people come up to me and say “Man I love your track” I’m always a bit taken back but very flattered.

You’ve appealed to audiences and music critics all over the world; do you have plans to tour elsewhere, such as the UK, Europe, America?
My agent is planning a UK tour at the moment with some dates in Asia on the way, and mainland Europe including some Ibiza dates, so that should be fun. America is on the agenda and I’m in the middle of talking to a few agencies right now about doing some shows in the US summer.

Is there an album on the way?
[Laughs] We’ll see!

Does living in Bondi influence the music you create?
I love the beach so I love living there, but I don’t think it inspires me musically. I think people, art and music inspire me and that could come from anywhere, I just have to be open to those experiences.

It’s such an iconic piece of Sydney; what are the best things about living in the middle of it?
The food! And all of my buddies live in the area.

If you’re trying to impress a friend visiting from overseas, where in Bondi would you take them for the perfect day/night out?
The best breakfast is at Porch and Parlour; the best lunch is Lox Stock & Barrel hands down; and for dinner, Icebergs, Da Orazio or Bondi’s Best. There are definitely no clubs in Bondi, but for drinks the Anchor is good fun.

Say I want to go out for breakfast in Bondi, where can I get the best and what should I order?
Porch and Parlour – get the smashed eggs, or get the Shakshouka eggs from Trio.

What one track would you say epitomises the atmosphere and feeling of Bondi?
[Laughs] Please refer to the Bondi Hipster episodes!
