Nine-Day Kimberley Safari
Whether departing from Broome or leaving from Darwin, the Nine-Day Kimberley Safari with Kimberley Wild Expeditions is an adventure tour of one of Australia’s greatest regions, the Kimberley. Home of mountainous rock formations, national parks, spectacular gorges and gushing waterfalls, you can soak it all up during this nine-day safari.
Say you leave from Broome, the most popular outback town in the Kimberley region, you leave the open road for the Oscar Range and Tunnel Creek, where a 750m tunnel passes under the Napier Range. With a Banuba guide, you’ll get to head through the tunnel and learn the important cultural and historical significance of the area.
Your second begins with a visit to Windjana Gorge, a top spot in the Kimberley to spot freshwater crocodiles! Back on the road, you embark on a drive of the famous Gibb River Road, a 600km dirt track that runs through the region. If the time of year is right, you’ll get the chance to explore Galvins, Adcock or Manning Gorge before camping at Mt Barnett.
Travelling along the Gibb River Road on day three, you pass through some of the oldest parts of the country, which will give you a real taste of remote Australia. Crossing the Pentecost River, you reach El Questro Station, where you’ll sleep off day three and wake up bright and early in the morning to explore the amazing sights of the station, including a hike in the beautiful Cockburn Ranges for a swim under the waterfall at Emma Gorge. With another night at El Questro, you can enjoy an ice-cold beer in the station bar!
You leave El Questro on the fifth day to drive through the gorgeous scenery of the Durack Ranges towards Turkey Creek. In a 4WD, you reach the incredible site of the Bungle Bungles in Purnululu National Park just as the sun sets over the Osmond Ranges and you set up camp. On the morning of day six, you’re treated to the remarkable sight of the Bungle Bungles. These black and orange striped domes provide a backdrop you’ll never forget, and walking amongst them will drop your jaw to the floor. With time to visit Echidna Chasm and Cathedral Gorge, you can opt to see the Bungle Bungles from a different perspective with an optional helicopter flight!
Say goodbye to the Bungle Bungles on day seven and enjoy some more 4WD action to Kununurra. If you’re making good on time, you might have a chance to explore the Hidden Valley, a short distance from the town, before you pitch up at Lake Argyle. Enjoy the breath taking sight of this enormous manmade lake before you head back on the road on day eight to cross the border into the Northern Territory.
On your ninth and final day, you replace the Kimberley with Katherine, including a stop at Nitmiluk Gorge or a swim in Edith Falls. After drying yourselves off, you embark on the home stretch to Darwin, the tropical capital of the north.
The Nine-Day Kimberley Safari is a group tour with fellow travellers and an experienced tour guide, so a great way to meet new people and discover more about this part of Australia. From $1,995pp, you receive meals, camp accommodation and entry into the national parks and attractions. If you did want to add on a helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungles, you can book one for $350.
