Nursing In Australia

There are some jobs in Australia that are always looking for qualified individuals to fill the spaces available, and nursing is one of them. A highly important occupation in all states, only those that are deemed to have substantial qualifications will get to take care of the population and have a career in nursing in Australia.

For starters, nurses in Australia have to be registered, which is a lengthy process even if you’re a born-and-raised citizen. To be considered for approval, international applicants need to undergo assessment with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, which also approves registration. The board will decide whether your educational qualifications, as an international applicant, are substantially equivalent to approved Australian qualifications, which will help them decide whether you’re qualified to care for patients safely.

As an international applicant, you must meet eight criteria based on your qualifications to be eligible for registration, and provide supporting documentation as evidence.

1. The qualification makes you eligible to register as a nurse in the country you gained said qualification.
2. The education institution where you did your studies was externally accredited while you were there.
3. The program of study you chose was externally accredited to award you with a qualification in nursing.
4. The qualification is equivalent to at least an Australian bachelor degree.
5. The qualification was awarded following at least 800 hours of experience in a practice setting.
6. The qualification was awarded following study into various aspects of nursing.
7. The qualification was awarded to you following successful completion of all parts of your study and graduation from your education institution.
8. The education institution has confirmed that you have a qualification in nursing, with assessment in medication management including drug calculation, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

You will need to provide relevant support for your qualifications, and all other requested documents (evidence of identity, criminal history, English language skills), in an AGOS-40 application for general registration for internationally qualified nurses and midwives. The national fee for general registration is $150.

If you are approved and become registered as a nurse, you can start finding job openings in Australia. You can contact hospitals directly for employment opportunities, search online, or join a nursing agency in Australia that can supply you with casual work or long-term placements.
