Peru was once home to the Incan people and their stamp on the area, still survives today in the form of the old Incan capital of Cuzco, and one of the most famous ruins on earth – Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu is believed to have been built circa 1450 around the time that Pachacutec Inca Yupanqui (1438–71) and Túpac Inca Yupanqui (1472–93) – to of the greatest Incan rulers were in power. However, interestingly the fort was abandoned around 100 years later due to the arrival of the Spanish settlers. Today the ruins are frequented by hundreds of tourists who come from all around the world to walk around the ancient ruins 7,970 ft above sea level.

There’s more the Peru than Machu Picchu however. Lake Titicaca near to the Bolivian border is one of South America’s largest lakes and houses some of the most rare aquatic wildlife – including giant frogs. The lake borders both countries and is said to be the birthplace of the Incas. On its banks, you’ll also find ancient ruins as well as a tangle of jungle that fringes its shores.

Nazca Lines also takes centre stage whilst visiting this history-filled country. Nazca Lines are hung rock carvings that are thought to be around 2000 years old, however they were only discovered 80 years ago by plane (which should give you some idea of how large they are). These veritable “white elephants” appear to depict various animals such as monkeys and birds, however the meaning behind them is often theorised and disputed.

Another sight to behold whilst visiting Peru is the 900 meter deep, Colca Canyon. Vast in size the canyon is also home to the giant Condor. Whilst visiting Colca you can also take advantage of activities such as water rafting, cycling, horse riding and trekking.
