Roy Chubby Brown
Roy Chubby Brown After 21 DVDs and 43 years in the biz, Roy Chubby Brown is back in Australia and is as brilliant and offensive as ever. The man whose show comes with the famous disclaimer, “If easily offended, fuck off!” talks with BBM’s Sian Gammie about publicity, swearing and rock n’ roll.
Roy Chubby Brown You’re banned from a lot of television in the UK, why can’t you say the c-word on TV?
Well, they always like someone to blame. Some people don’t have the balls to admit to what they’ve done, but I do. You know they say that all publicity is good publicity? Well that’s a load of bollocks. Can you imagine the headline? “Chubby Brown Found In The Middle Of High Street With His Hand On His Dick!” That wouldn’t be good for business.
Do you think it’s important to push the boundaries in your comedy?
British humour has always been cruel and hurtful and sarcastic. My philosophy is that while we’re laughing at each other, we’re not fighting are we? If I had a dollar for every time I was called a Fat Pommy Bastard I’d be a very rich man.
Why did you make the switch for regular stand-up to blue humour?
When I started out there were nine thousand comedians all doing the same thing and they all wanted to get on telly. I didn’t want to do that. Then it just spreads. Men come home laughing and their wives want to know what they’re laughing at. So then the women were saying, “we’ve had sex, we’ve done this and that, why can’t we come?” And they love it!
Do people still complain even now?
Yes. But my philosophy is, well if you don’t like it, get your coat and fuck off!
So we won’t expect any taming down for your Sydney shows?
Fuck no. Most of my material is Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll. I don’t do that alternate thing where they rabbit on for two hours about fuck all.
I’m a joke teller.
