Selfie At A Funeral Anyone?
The ‘Selfie’ seems to be the Myspace bulletin of today’s generation; one or two pop up and that’s fine, but when your news feed is suddenly overflowing with dozens of them from one particularly dedicated social media addict, you kind of want to deactivate your account…
But how about when these selfies also feature the perpetrator’s deceased Grandma in the background? Or the remains of a concentration camp juxtaposed against the selfie-takers big smiling grin? Is this just today’s generation pushing the boundaries of what’s considered ‘funny’, or is it just disgustingly and inappropriately narcissistic?
It seems the majority of the internet think the latter.
A widespread outrage has occurred following the introduction of the Tumblr site, ‘Selfies at Serious Places’, which denotes hundreds of selfies taken from the internet of social networkers snapping a forward-facer whilst situated somewhere most would consider highly inappropriate; funerals, Auschwitz, Ground Zero… you name it, it’s been selfied.
But instead of the blog being the brainchild of some reclusive teen with a questionable attitude on what’s acceptable to gather from the public domain, the site was actually introduced by Fast Company’s senior Editor Jason Feifer. On the topic of his blog’ material, Feifer explained on the BBC news site: “This is a thing that people do – and when you see it in aggregate it takes on a meaning. For the first time in human history, we have the ability to share whatever we see, whenever we see it”.
Hmmm, we’re not so sure that’s necessarily a good thing to whack on a blog though…
