Splendour In The Grass 2014

Australia’s answer to Glastonbury, Splendour In The Grass is returning to the North Byron Parklands for three spectacular days of some of the best music on the planet right now. Back for its 13th year, there’s a whole lot of fun and frivolity to be had when the artists, bands, comedians, stalls and shops invade Byron Bay from Friday 25th – Sunday 27th July 2014. Back in 2001, Splendour In The Grass was born and quickly became the sanctuary of every music addict. Byron Bay hosted the festival since its inception until 2009, when it was relocated to Woodford, Queensland in 2010 and ‘11 while a new permanent location was found. The festival returned to Byron in 2012 where it saw success at Belongil Fields, but moved to North Byron Parklands in 2013, and sees its return there this year with many new and returning features.

With an ever-increasingly awesome line-up each year, Splendour has become Australia’s stand-out music festival, with a five star line up of acts on their bill. Headliners have included Supergrass in 2002, Coldplay in 2003 and 2011, Arctic Monkeys in 2007 and The Strokes in 2010, while up-and-coming acts both local and
international have proven that they can put on just as good a show. This year is no less exciting, with the incredible US duo that is Outkast bringing hits like ‘Ms Jackson’, ‘Hey Ya’ and ‘Roses’ to the only Australian stage they will be gracing this year. Also exclusive to Splendour this year are Two Door Cinema Club, Interpol, Darkside and Chvrches. UK controversial Pop princess, Lily Allen, will be headlining the final day, with Foster The People, Ben Howard and Nick Mulvey preceding, while Nina Las Vegas and Motez are just two of the DJs spinning the tunes on the decks. With the Parklands’ natural Amphitheatre hosting the main stage, the quality is expected to be better than ever.

Besides live music, Splendour creates an entire settlement of shopping, drinking, dancing and entertainment. The Global Village aims to see to every need from a yoga class to a good meal and market stalls. Get your thinking caps on and enter the Splendour Forum, where special guests are invited to ponder the unanswered questions that have us all baffled. For something a little lighter, this space transforms into the brand new Splendour Late Night Comedy Club, so be prepared to laugh your arse off to the quickest and wittiest comedians in town.

This wouldn’t be a festival without the classic sleeping arrangement that is camping. Not exactly the most luxurious way to spend the night, it’s true festival style and Splendour makes it even easier for you. With more space for camping directly next to the festival site, there’s less time wasted walking to and from your tent. The campsite opens on Wednesday 23rd July for a total of five nights, so there’s plenty of time to get settled, sample the hot food stalls and explore before the party kicks off. Parking is available next to the campsite and all vehicles will need a pass for the arrival day, while caravans and camper vans can stay in the RV park.

How much will all this fun and excitement set you back? A ticket for the whole three days, plus entry into the event site on Thursday, costs $355pp, and a camping ticket for Wednesday – Monday is $99. If you want to come just to see your favourite artist on one day, single-day tickets are $149pp. All tickets have an additional booking fee and car passes are applied to each vehicle, so save money by finding others to carpool with.
