The Best Day Trips From Darwin
As your gateway to adventure in the Northern Territory, there are some very unique day trips from Darwin. Heading off to the surrounding national parks or remaining in the inner city, these are some of our favourites…
Crocosaurus Cove
Possibly the most exciting activity right in the heart of the city, Crocosaurus Cove provides an up-close encounter with the big beasts of the Top End. Highlights include the famous Cage Of Death, which offers 15 minutes in the water with one of these five-metre reptiles in Australia’s only crocodile dive experience. Only one or two people can accommodate the cage at once, so you’ll achieve an uninterrupted view of the croc even as it’s being fed from above. Other activities that are slightly less terrifying include holding a baby crocodile, crocodile feeding time and a look at the other reptiles including turtles, snakes and geckos.

Litchfield National Park
One of the closest national parks to Darwin, Litchfield is full of the waterfalls, termite mounds and rugged landscapes that are synonymous with Australia, and can be visited with Wallaroo Tours. A one-day tour kicks off with a cruise along Adelaide River to see the crocs jump out of the water for their meat. On board a tour bus, you delve deep into the park to get a close-up look of the termite mounds, before visiting the Wangi Falls, Buley Rock Hole and Florence Falls for a cooling dip. Just before the tour ends, you’re treated to an ocean sunset in Darwin with a meal of prawns and champagne.

Nitmiluk National Park
Less than 250km from Darwin is Nitmiluk National Park, which holds some of the Northern Territories most precious gems. A tour of the park includes a refreshing swim of the beautiful Edith Falls and a cruise through Katherine Gorge. With prolific wildlife and vegetation, there’s plenty to keep an eye out for. Stop by Adelaide River and enjoy a dinner of fish and chips before taking a selfie with Charlie the mounted buffalo from Crocodile Dundee. This tour is available with Darwin Day Tours and includes lunch and a guide. This is the perfect destination on your Outback Tours and although the land is not as flat and vast as you would see on Uluru Tours, in no way do you not feel swallowed by majestic and expansive landscapes in the Nitmiluk National Park.

Bathurst Island
With a flight from Darwin to Bathurst Island of the Tiwi Islands off of the coast of Northern Territory, you can spend a day with the modern-day Aboriginal community of the Tiwi people, learning about their cultural rituals, viewing their unique art, witnessing a smoking ceremony and drinking billy tea with the locals. In the stunning surroundings of Bathurst Island, this guided tour is a rare opportunity to discover more about a lesser travelled destination, including lunch and flights to and from Darwin.

Kakadu National Park
You’ll have to be up and ready early for a trip to Kakadu, because this tour departs from Darwin at 6.15am sharp. It’s well worth it though, because this one-day adventure includes viewing Aboriginal rock art, spotting birdlife in the wetlands and saltwater crocodiles on a cruise, and learning about local life at the Warradjan Cultural Centre in this World Heritage Site and the largest national park in Australia. With hills, flood plains, woodland, rock formations and fringed coastline, there’s some of the most diverse landscape in Kakadu National Park.
