You can’t get any closer to the Great Barrier Reef than sleeping in its very waters, so if you want to submerge yourself in the heart of the world’s largest coral reef, you can spend a night on a floating pontoon 40 nautical miles from the Queensland shore.

After you’ve dried off, get cosy in a traditional Aussie swag (similar to a giant sleeping bag-tent) for a night under the night sky and twinkling stars. With no light pollution, you’ve never seen the stars so clear.

Wake up under the beating sun for an early morning dip, hearty breakfast, and another snorkel session before lunch. By 3pm, you have to say goodbye to the reef to return to Airlie Beach, the images of thousands of fish and millions of stars rich in your memory.

From $369pp, included in the price of the one-night Reefsleep is overnight swag accommodation, transfers to and from the pontoon, meals and snorkelling equipment (diving equipment extra). You can also add on a helicopter flight and massage – if you’re feeling flush!

The pontoon does welcome guests during the day, but Reefsleep will only accommodate nine guests overnight, creating an intimate, personable experience that you can brag to all of your friends
