Great Barrier Reef Experience: You can’t get any closer to the Great Barrier Reef than sleeping in its very waters, so if you want to submerge yourself in the heart of the world’s largest coral reef, you can spend a night on a floating pontoon 40 nautical miles from the Queensland shore.

Cruise from the seaside town of Airlie Beach, past the Whitsunday Islands, to the Reefsleep pontoon, and spend the rest of the day exploring the underwater world beneath. Tropical fish in all different shapes, sizes and colours, beautiful coral and maybe even the odd turtle! To keep up your strength for snorkelling and diving, you’ll be treated to morning and afternoon teas and a buffet lunch.

Come evening, take in the sunset from the upper deck, and add a night dive for $150pp to see what you can find in the reef under the moon’s reflection. After you’ve dried off, get cosy in a traditional Aussie swag (similar to a giant sleeping bag-tent) for a night under the night sky and twinkling stars. With no light pollution, you’ve never seen the stars so clear.

Wake up under the beating sun for an early morning dip, a hearty breakfast, and another snorkel session before lunch. By 3 pm, you have to say goodbye to the reef to return to Airlie Beach, with the images of thousands of fish and millions of stars rich in your memory.

From $369pp, the one-night Reefsleep includes overnight swag accommodation, transfers to and from the pontoon, meals, and snorkelling equipment (diving equipment is extra). If you’re feeling flush, you can also add on a helicopter flight and massage!

The pontoon does welcome guests during the day, but Reefsleep will only accommodate nine guests overnight, creating an intimate, personable experience that you can brag to all of your friends
