While Contiki may take you to some amazing places around the world, it’s the experience they create that can’t be beaten. Itineraries made to perfection so you get to see the best bits, tour guides that are helpful as well as loads of fun, and a group of people that you spend one or two weeks with that soon become lifelong friends! To explain a bit more about the Contiki way of travel, we spoke to first-time traveller, Natasha Owles about her experience on the road trip from Darwin to Sydney in Australia.
I chose Contiki as it was my first time travelling and I was going solo and wanted the safety of being in a group. Also, I wanted to see as much as I could in the six weeks I had, which I extended to 10 weeks as I was loving the Aussie lifestyle. I looked online and found their site, and I had seen good reviews for the company. I found the trip and decided one day that I was just going to book it and go! I booked early June and left end of September.
This was my first trip to Australia; I have always wanted to go but couldn’t find a friend that was ready to go, so I went solo!
I did quite a few Me Time activities, which were all amazing and well worth every penny. The Uluru scenic flight had amazing views from above and was an awesome experience with friendly staff; the flight from Alice Springs to Cairns also offers awesome views of Ayers Rock and the Olgas as you take off.
I had seen the Harley Davidson bike ride from when I booked my trip and was so excited. It was amazing! The guys were great and friendly and it was a comfortable ride.
Cairns white water rafting was EPIC, a must-do. The guys are great, so happy and love their jobs. We had a good full day out on the water, and it was a nice trip up to Tully with amazing views all day.
The Outer Barrier Reef cruise was an amazing day on the reef with snorkelling and a scenic ride over the reef. The photographer was swimming around getting awesome shots of you and the amazing fish, including Wally, a resident fish that was super friendly and allowed you to touch him.
The day sailing around the Whitsundays was another must-do; the food and alcohol were included all day and all equipment too! We visited amazing beaches for the perfect day out.
The Surfers Paradise tandem skydive is great fun and you get to land on the beach! Definitely pick an early time as it can be delayed.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is a must-do when visiting Sydney; it’s great fun and you get a view of the city from a different angle. The evening climb is cheaper than the daytime climbs, but as you climb, the sun goes down so you see the city in day and night time with all the city lights coming on.
I feel that I experienced all Australia had to offer and more. Contiki took us to places I didn’t know about and I feel like I visited some of the most beautiful places in the world.
Some of the Outback group did the whole trip (I think around 15 of us) then we met the rest of the group in Cairns. The Outback tour had around 30 people and the East Coast around 50. As we started on each tour, everyone got up to the microphone and said their name and a few things about themselves including a guilty pleasure – very funny! The tour guides worked hard on everyone to come together and make friends.
My bucket list now has a lot ticked off and I’ve got to do many of the things I have always wanted to do!
Contiki make sure you know what’s happening next. They help you book hotels and sort flights, and they’re keen to make sure you have somewhere to go, even booking your next trips.
The trip all in all was very expensive but it was worth the money and I feel I got my money’s worth with the trip. The tour guides are amazing, so helpful and happy to help with anything you need to make sure you have the best time.
Finally, I met so many amazing people! I’m visiting one of the girls in Canada in June, and also planning a trip to New Zealand to see another, so I’ve got friends for life all over the world.
I wouldn’t change a thing about the trip – it was perfect!
