This Week’s Top Five Songs
There’s always plenty of new songs coming out every day. We’ve compiled just a few of our favourites from the past week below. Have a listen and tell us what you think.
Coldplay – ‘Oceans’
Chris Martin & co. have just unveiled a brand new song from their upcoming album ‘Ghost Stories’, released next month. It’s the third to be taken from the album, following ‘Midnight’ and ‘Magic’. We don’t have the studio version yet, but judging from this lovely performance they did for BBC Radio 1, they are going back to the sound of ‘Parachutes’ and that can only be a good thing.
Jamie XX – ‘Girl’
London-based producer Jamie XX has unveiled a brand new song. ‘Girl’ is a mind-boggling, hypnotic tune which of course recalls The XX, but the bass is bouncier and the beats heavier. The ‘Girl/Sleep Sound’ 12″ will be out on 5th May. Now, won’t you release an album please?
White Lung – ‘Snake Jaw’
The Canadians from White Lung have unveiled the second single to be taken from their upcoming third album ‘Deep Fantasy’, which will be out on 17th June. ‘Snake Jaw’ deals with body dysmorphia and if you feel like the new Pixies songs are not that exciting, this is for you. It’s savage punk rock at its finest and you won’t resist its contagious energy.

José James – ‘Every Little Thing’
Following on from the excellent ‘No Beginning No End’ album released last year, José James is preparing to drop a new record called ‘While You Were Sleeping’ on 10th June. ‘Every Little Thing’ is the first song to be taken from it, and it’s a massive departure for the Minneapolis-based Jazz singer. You can’t really call him a Jazz singer anymore, since this new tune owes more to Rock and Hip-Hop than anything else. Whatever it’s called, it’s damn addictive.

Prince – ‘The Breakdown’
2014 definitely looks like it belongs to Prince. After wowing fans with a series of intimate gigs in London and Manchester during which he presented his new power trio band 3rdEyeGirl, His Purpleness revealed he had just made a new deal with Warner Bros. Shortly after the announcement, ‘The Breakdown’ appeared online, and we can barely contain our excitement. He’s back in full ‘Purple Rain’ mode, and it sounds ace!
