What Not To Miss In Port Douglas
If you’re thinking of making your first trip up to Port Douglas soon, here are the local secrets that you’d be mad to miss out on brought to you by the guys at United Backpackers Port Douglas…
The food is not what you’d expect
The pubs and restaurants in Port Douglas know how to serve up mouth-watering, unique and great value grub. Make sure you pop into Mocka’s Pies & Bakehouse on Grant Street and try a crocodile or kangaroo pie for something out of the ordinary but sumptuously delicious. If you’re after giant burgers, Off The Track should be on your hit list for a feast. With musically-inspired burgers like The J Cash, The Presley and The Stevie Chix, this Warner Street joint is often featured on “The Best Burgers In Australia” lists. And, for those looking for a bargain, we suggest the $10 Chicken Parma Night every Wednesday at Paddy’s.
There’s loads of free stuff!
As you may not have the cash to splash, there’s some great free stuff to take advantage of in Port Douglas. For the purchase of a beer at the Central Hotel, you can get free WiFi so you can post all of
your holiday snaps to social media. On Tuesday nights, the hotel, located on Macrossan Street, also puts on free salsa lessons. Out on the ocean, you can even enjoy a free sunset sail courtesy of the Port Douglas Yacht Club. Every Wednesday from around 4pm, members of the club volunteer their time and their yachts to take members of the public out sailing. It’s recommended that you arrive at 4pm to get your name in and wait to be requested. Yachts generally depart at 5pm and return by 7pm.
Everyone shops at the markets
With markets held twice a week, you can buy everything from arts and crafts to fruit and veg. The sunset market on the marina offers a great atmosphere with live music alongside the gorgeous North Queensland sunset from 2-7pm. The big daddy is without a doubt the enormous Sunday market. From 8am-2pm, dozens of stalls take over Market Park on Wharf Street with all produce and goods sold made or grown by the stallholders themselves.
You can do yoga on the beach
In the early morning between 8am and 9am, you can do yoga on Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas’ most precious stretch of sand. A great way to start your day, this one-hour beach yoga class with
WindSwell is just $15pp and everyone’s welcome. You don’t even need to book: just head down with
your beach towel and get flexible!
