Nadine Landry and Sammy Lind (Foghorn Stringband – Canada) – two sets
with The Beenies.
Nadine Landry and Stephen “Sammy” Lind will be travelling throughout Australia for the first time, showcasing their mix of Appalachian and Midwestern old time fiddle music, and early country and Cajun music to this show. Alternating between fiddle, guitar, banjo and accordion, they play and sing true to the roots of American music with energy and respect. They are members of the critically acclaimed Foghorn Stringband, the Dirk Powell Band, and they play with Jesse Lege, Joel Savoy and the Cajun Country Revival. Having collaborated with countless influential musicians and performing and teaching over 250 dates a year, they travel the world spreading their love and respect for traditional music. Their first recording, ‘Granddad’s Favourite’, showcases Sammy’s fine fiddling and banjo playing backed up by Nadine’s solid guitar playing. Martin Atkin (UK – PIL, Killing Joke, Ministry)
with Burn In Hell.
Martin Atkins’ three decades in the music business spans genres, borders and industries. After playing drums in a variety of English bands, Martin auditioned for and subsequently joined Johnny Rotten’s Public Image Limited in 1979. His first contribution to the band was co-writing and performing on the song, ‘Bad Baby’, for the revered ‘Metal Box’ album. Over the next five years he played with and managed Killing Joke, and toured with Ministry. Martin will spin some of his exclusive mash-ups (Ministry vs Killing Joke and more), some unreleased tracks, and stripped down glitchy dub and generally anything he feels like from the last 60 years. This show will also feature a spoken word/visual presentation on the socio-economic backdrop to the punk rock revolution in the UK – growing up in the Northeast of the UK – power cuts, strikes, Margaret Thatcher, the I.R.A. and PUNK… then moving to London to be in the thick of post-punk energy and join PiL with Johnny Lydon. Watch the video for Killing Joke’s ‘Love Like Blood’ here.

Cumbia Cosmonauts (album launch)
with Congo Tardis and Lamine Sonko & The African Intelligence.
The Cumbia Cosmonauts have toured European and Australian festivals, and have supported Gotan Project and Thievery Corporation in their national Australian tours. Now they are releasing their debut album. Emerging from somewhere in the distant reaches of the space/time continuum, the Cumbia Cosmonauts have built up a reputation as a solid live act with their signature blend of super heavy Afro-Colombian rhythms, bugged out accordion, synth and sci-fi sweeps. Whether you call it Digital Cumbia or simply Tropical Bass, this is undoubtedly futurist folk music. Watch this clip of Cumbia Cosmonauts supporting Thievery Corporation at The Palace.

The Mess Hall – 2nd show due to popular demand
with Super Wild Horses.
This will be The Mess Hall’s one and only Melbourne show for 2012. Having last played in Melbourne in 2010, and with a recent one-off, blindingly great sold-out Sydney show under their whippet-thin belts, the show will provide a timely reminder of their quality. The Mess Hall has released a series of critically acclaimed EPs and albums since their formation. Their album, ‘The Devil’s Elbow’, won the 2007 Australian Music Prize, and following the release of their most recent album, ‘For The Birds’, in 2009, the band has spent the past couple of years concentrating on “other projects”. Singer and guitarist Jed Kurzel won Feature Film Soundtrack of the Year for his acclaimed ‘Snowtown’ score at the 2011 Screen Music Awards, among other things. Drummer Cec Condon formed freakbeat collective Machete Moon. The Mess Hall will reconvene to record a new album at some point, but in the meantime this is the only opportunity to see one of the country’s finest live outfits perform in 2012. Watch the video for The Mess Hall’s ‘Pills’.
