As a newcomer to Sydney, you might want to find out the best things to do in the city from those that know it best, whether you’re looking for somewhere to chill out or kick off your day with a good breakfast. Who better to ask than a Sydney-sider? We speak to Mikayla Lamm for her local guide to Sydney.
What’s your name and where are you originally from?
Mikayla Lamm, Copacabana, NSW.
Where do you work?
Beach Road Hotel, Bondi Beach.
What do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy exploring new places around Bondi, expanding my taste buds at Harry’s De Cafe with potato, mushy pea and gravy pies. Running along the coast walk. Lying in the sun as much as possible and window shopping. Bondi is full of fresh new designs and what better way to spend your afternoon after a day in the sun?
Where’s your favourite place to hang in Bondi?
The south side of Bondi on the grassy hill! It’s sand-free with loads of shade for those extra hot summer days when you need a break from the summer sun.
Where do you get the best coffee in Bondi?
I’m not a big coffee fan to be honest, but I have searched high and low for the best chai in town and have found Gertrude and Alice have a great chai latte! The cafe is also a bookstore, so pull up a chair, choose a book and indulge in a mini escape from the real world while you sip on the best chai in Bondi!
What’s your favourite restaurant or cafe in Bondi?
Speedos, North Bondi – the lemon cooler is to die for! If you’re chocolate obsessed like me, try the cronuts – you won’t regret it!
Where do you get the best breakfast in Bondi?
Gustos acai bowl with homemade granola; it’s a tasty light treat in the mornings before a quick jog along the Bondi promenade.
What’s your favourite day of the week at the Beach Road Hotel?
My favourite day is Friday; all the locals come down and it’s a great chance to catch up with them and enjoy a chat before the DJ drops in to spin some classic hits. You’re in for a groovy night with hours of tasteful tunes. All four bars are open so it’s a great chance to take advantage of a wide range of events and special guests – there’s something for everyone! DJs, bands and the beer garden downstairs with some chilled beats.
What’s your favourite cocktail at the Beach Road Hotel?
At the moment it’s the cocktail of the month, The Cuba Lubre, with mutiny spiced rum, coke and topped with fresh limes – you can’t go wrong!
What’s your favourite dish on the menu?
I can’t go past the tandoori chicken pizza topped with semi-dried tomatoes, it’s an easy choice to share with friends and goes down great with a fresh cider.
If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would love to travel to the Great Barrier Reef; it amazes me that we have only explored 10% of the whole ocean and has me constantly wondering how much more we are yet to discover.
