‘A Steady Rain’ – Theatre Review
‘Starsky and Hutch’, that’s what Denny (Michael Booth) and Joey (Sam O’Sullivan) consider themselves. Friends since kindergarten, they have been working together as police on the streets of Chicago for several years. Their friendship is soon put to the test when one night on the beat, they are called to a domestic disturbance that goes sour. The grimy underbelly of Chicago law enforcement sees both guys forced to deal with moral and personal issues neither of them ever thought they would be forced to address.
‘A Steady Rain’ is Cathode Ray Tube’s fourth production, and a testament to the philosophy of the Sydney-based collective. Not obsessed with big-scale productions, this ‘band’ as they consider themselves, simply stage plays that they want to act in. The result- a thought provoking and completely captivating piece which demanded your attention for every single moment of the one-act play. Harnessed by two fantastic performances from Booth and O’Sullivan, both actors demonstrate their characters attributes and flaws with such gritty realism, you almost forget you’re watching a play, and feel like two guys are simply telling you their harrowing story. This is one performance you’ll want to tell your friends you saw, so don’t miss out.
