Alternative Valentine’s Day Dates In Sydney

Valentine’s day. Perhaps when you were back home a card, some wine and flowers would have done the trick. Maybe you were a chocolates and movie kind of guy. Well listen up, you’re in Sydney now and that kind of half-arsed romanticism will impress no-one. No-one.

Luckily for you, BBM has found a range of different date ideas to inspire you – from the cheap to the decadent, cute to seriously ‘awww’ – and all a little unusual.

So put down the chocolates – ah, sod it, eat them now you’ve got them – and book one of these…

Alternative Valentine’s Day Dates In Sydney: BridgeClimb

Something that everyone should do while in Australia. The climb may be steep in price but you cannot top that view or the experience of hiking up one of the World’s most iconic structures.

It is every bit as fun as it looks as you pull on a boiler suit and take the walk up. But don’t worry, it is not too strenuous and, reassuringly, you don’t feel in any danger of tumbling to your doom. This will impress any date, give you some great memories, lovely photo mementos and even a souvenir hat.

And in case you were thinking it may not be romantic enough, more than 4,000 people have got engaged during BridgeClimb, and around 25 weddings have been held on the bridge. Climber Mitchell Robinson said: “It’s an incredible way to see the best part of Sydney and to share it with your partner makes it all the more special.”

Alternative Valentine’s Day Dates In Sydney: Tandem Bike Hire

Pretend you’re Wiggo and she’s Pendleton and roll down to Bicentennial Park for a bike ride. Sure, you could ride one each, but this is a special date, so make an effort and rent out a tandem from $25.

There is plenty of parkland to ride around, including 35km of safe cycleway at the Olympic Park, a series of shorter scenic routes and three bike safaris where you can check out beautiful sites like wildlife refuges, mangrove boardwalks, shipwrecks, art and all kinds of avian life.

It’s relaxing, perfect for a bit of one-on-one alone time and cheap. Make sure to take a picnic, too.

Segway Tours

If you have ever seen the Youtube clip of a chimpanzee riding a segway then you will know this is a winner. There is also plenty of scope for laughs as you get used to the wobbly buggers – although they are amazingly easy to get the hang of – and photo opportunities galore.

Based near Sydney Olympic Park – don’t do what I did and arrive at the train station with 20 minutes to spare, it is not that close and your date won’t be impressed – book ahead for a 60-minute all-terrain X2 Adventure tour ($89) or the 90-minute X2 Adventure Plus tour ($119) which both take you cross country at the historic Newington Armoury and its picturesque surroundings on an off-road Segway.

Or you can just rock up at weekends and public holidays and take a 30-minute fun ride ($39) for a one-of-a-kind experience that cannot fail to put a smile on both of your faces.

Hunter Valley Wine Tasting

This has all the hallmarks of a classic: amazing scenery, chocolate, cuddly animals and lots of booze.

Even then, Kangariffic’s Hunter Valley tour ($98) will exceed your expectations. Owner, driver and guide Sam Collins’ bus is new, comfortable, and with a maximum of 12on the tour and Sam’s warm Aussie hospitality, you feel like you are on a road trip with mates.

Other Hunter Valley trips focus solely on wine, but Kangariffic broadens its scope by stopping a wildlife sanctuary to cuddle koalas, kangaroos and emus among others before heading off to a small chocolate factory for some sweet samplers – all before lunch.

You also taste cheese, microbrewery beer and, of course lots of wine at three vineyards, including boutique wineries where you can pick up some real bargains of top plonk.

Tastings are incredibly fun and happily unpretentious. You learn a bit about wine but no-one is a snob about it -even my complete lack of knowledge was accommodated.

The scenery cannot be beaten. Doubtless you and your date will soon dream of moving out to the quiet life too.
