Animals in North West Kimberley Region of Australia
Animals of the Kimberley Region, Australia. Something that fascinates travellers, as well as terrifies me, is the Australian wildlife. No doubt stories can be blown completely out of proportion, but perhaps that is for good reason. Nonetheless, little does this stop travellers from wanting to see the cute as well as the scary. One region where it is all packed into one place is the Kimberley in North West Australia, which is why so many explorers utilise the services of tour companies like Kimberley Wild Adventure Tours. What you may animals may you encounter:
Animals of the Kimberley Region, Australia: Mammals and Marsupials of Kimberley Region
Australia’s North West is home to an incredible list of mammals, such a possums, wallabies, dingos, flying foxes, euros, quolls and even nocturnal species like sugar gliders and also the endangered bilby and bandicoot.
Many small carnivorous marsupial species also live here, including dunnarts and the pebble mound mouse. Fortunately for the animals and the travellers, many of these species have been saved from extinction due to the release of the European Fox, which is unable to adapt to such a hot climate.
Poisonous and Dangerous Creatures in the Kimberley Region
Australia’s North West hosts some of the most poisonous and dangerous animals in the world. These animals are not particularly intent on being dangerous to humans, however, if they are not crossed without extreme caution, they can cause severe injuries.
Snakes
The tiapan, king brown, western brown, and death adders are common in Australia’s North West. All snakes are protected species, so if you see one, steer well clear and never try to kill them.
Crocodiles
The Northwest is home to freshwater and Saltwater crocodiles, which are locally known as ‘freshies’ and ‘salties’. Freshwater crocodiles can be found in creeks, rivers, freshwater pools, and billabongsAlthough freshwater Crocodiles may look menacing, they are considered to be less of a threat due to their diet, which is mainly fish. They are generally looking to avoid humans rather than seeing them as a potential meal.
Saltwater crocodiles, or Salties, are considered to be extremely dangerous. They inhabit all of the same areas as Freshwater Crocodiles, only they are also found in saltwater rivers, tidal rivers and have even been spotted on beaches. Saltwater crocodiles can grow up to 7 meters long and are famous for being supreme hunters in both land and water.
The Kimberley is one of the most diverse landscapes in the world, and to rival this, so too is the wildlife, which is why so many travellers turn to Kimberley Wild Adventure Tours to enable a fun, safe and enjoyable experience.
