Benjamin Till’s London Requiem At Rich Mix
Rich Mix is proud to launch the first elements of the London Requiem on The Space, the new digital arts service developed by Arts Council England in partnership with the BBC.
The London Requiem is a brand new classical composition, by Benjamin Till, written in tribute to those who rest in the capital’s cemeteries and graveyards.
The work quotes from inscriptions on gravestones found right across the city. It embraces the variety, vastness, and anonymity of London’s dead as well as capturing highly personal epitaphs to individuals.
Benjamin said: “I was struck by the simplicity of so many gravestones and how they are dominated by clichés. Then I thought about the difficulty of expressing all the love and emotion those inscriptions try to summarise. The epitaphs are the ultimate tweet – just a few words to sum up the feeling of an entire life.”
A series of short films, each illustrating a different movement in The London Requiem, reflect the journey Till took across the city as he wrote the work. Each film seeks to provide not just musical background, but examines some of the historical, social and spiritual issues raised.
