Nurses Registration Board
Nurses with overseas qualifications first have to register with the Nurses Registration Board in the state you want to work in. To work as a registered nurse, enrolled nurse, nurse practitioner or midwife in Australia, you must be registered with the NMBA.
As part of its public protection role, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) in partnership with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is responsible for assessing registration applications from internationally qualified nurses and midwives (IQNMs) to ensure they are suitably trained and qualified for registration in Australia.
The Qualification Assessment Criteria
From 2019, the NMBA has revised assessment criteria for IQNMs. The revised criteria will streamline the qualification assessment process; however, the outcomes from assessments will be the same as under the previous criteria. IQNM qualifications are assessed against the qualification criteria under section 53(b) of the National Law.
Each qualification is assessed against the following three criteria:
- A qualification recognized for registration
- Quality assurance and accreditation
- The academic level of qualification
Good Level of English
To nurse in Australia you must also have a good level of English. You may not be required to take an IELTS test if you are from the UK, the USA, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. Professionals from other countries have to comply and obtain a passing mark.
Actually going through the process to obtain a working holiday visa is not that hard. It’s literally a form on the Australian government website. Simply follow the instructions and fill out the form. You’ll need your passport with you!
Most people applying for the Working Holiday Australia Visa can fill out the form and forget about it but for nurses the work isn’t over yet. On the form it will ask whether or not you intend to work in a health care setting obviously this answer will be yes. You will then be informed that you are required to attend a medical screening. Your visa will not be looked at until you have a medical check-up.
Can you have the medical check-up before applying for the visa? Nope. To go for a medical for the Australian Working Holiday Visa as a nurse you need to take a specific number with you when you go. When you book your medical you will be asked for the number stated on your application form. As far as medicals go they are quite easy but you must visit a specific immigration panel doctor. Meaning you can’t go to the GP for it and no you can’t get it on the NHS.
