British Andy Murray Wins Wimbledon
Get ready to burst with pride – Andy Murray has won Wimbledon! The modest, witty Scot has become the first British man to win the tennis tournament for 77 years.
Winning the match in three straight sets (6-4, 7-5, 6-4) against world No.1 Novak Djokovic, it would appear to have been a breeze for our boy, but there were some nail-biting points, breaks and break-backs, and roars of triumph and anguish from both players.
After Djokovic hit the ball into the net, the crowd, which included Gerard Butler, Bradley Cooper and Victoria Beckham, got to their feet and Murray dropped to his, not quite believing that he’d finally accomplished his Everest at the age of 26. He ran up to his team, kissed girlfriend Kim Sears, shook the hand of coach Ivan Lendl and hugged his hysterical mum Judy (whom he almost forgot).
What better reason to get on the Pimm’s, wave your Union Jack through the streets and, once again, be proud to be British! Hurrah!
The women’s final was won by the 28 year-old French Marion Bartoli. However, her success was overshadowed by a comment made by BBC commentator John Inverdale, who suggested she wasn’t easy on the eye. During the match, Inverdale told listeners: ‘Do you think Bartoli’s dad told her when she was little, “You’re never going to be a looker, you’ll never be a Sharapova, so you have to be scrappy and fight”?’
Bartoli dismissed the remark, stating that she had dreamed of winning Wimbledon, not having a modelling contract. The BBC and Inverdale have since apologised.
