Australia becomes host to the most exciting and largest Chinese New Year celebrations outside of China throughout the month of February. Most events are free and there is something for everyone to get involved in across Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
Internationally renowned for its diversity of cultures within the city – Sydney brings home a mammoth celebration of the Chinese New Year this February. In 2012 alone, the Festival brought at least 100,000 people to attend the parade and more than 600,000 people celebrated across all festival events. An estimated 150,000 people from China and across Asia also visited Sydney, making the city a seriously exciting place to be to ring in the Chinese New Year.
The festival’s opening weekend explodes with Chinese arts and crafts, food stalls, and entertainment throughout the city. Learn to cook in true Asian style as the skies are illuminated with fireworks at the launch of the New Year festivities on the 8th February.
Everyone knows that Sydney does parades well, and the Chinese New Year parade is to be launched on the 17th February. Do not miss the Dragon Boat Races on the last weekend of February down at Cockle Bay for a day out of the ordinary. The long boats seat 20 people and things are certain to become a little heated as the race creates a stir.
Melbourne is also getting in on the celebration of the year of the snake. On the 10th February let the fun begin with the opening parade beginning on Little Bourke Street. There will be celebrations over seven days at various venues showcasing over 50 performances, 25 stalls, lion dances, dragon dances and plenty of firecrackers.
Perth also explores the celebrations of ‘the year of the black water snake’ on Sunday 10th February. As street performances take over and lion and dragon dance performances bring the city to life, head to James Street and Lake Street which are transformed into a dream world of colours, water and the sounds and smells of China. A multicultural concert will be staged at 7.00pm at the Northbridge Piazza, presenting vibrant and colourful act to show the importance of the Chinese New Year.
Brisbane kick starts the celebrations on the 8th February for 10 days of non-stop music, firecrackers, lion and dragon dance performances. As Brisbane says farewell to the dragon with a traditional Chinese Lion Dance, it also welcomes alternative celebrations for over a week with great experiences such as Vegetarian Music on Saturday 9th February, where only vegetables are used to create music that explores the history of China and the New Year celebrations.
