Cloak Yourself With The Latest ‘Anti-Social’ App
Cloak is the latest app on the market that has taken on the ‘anti-social’ approach which seems to be on the rise, with a popular trend which sees many conduction their conversations in private. Similar apps have seen a rise in use downloads where thoughts, messages and photographs are not necessarily shared with the entire community, these apps, like Whatsapp, Secrete and Snapchat have seen a huge rise in the social media market with Whatsapp being sold to Facebook for $19 bn (Aus $21.02 bn).
This new app takes location data from other social media apps to determine the area in which the person is believed to be in (great for avoiding the ex, annoying friend and basically anyone who you’d just rather avoid). Cloak syncs with apps such as Four Square and Instgram to calculate any persons given location.
“It does sound like a gimmick,” commented Nick Jones, editor-in-chief of App Magazine. “But I might use it myself!”
In an interview with the BBC, Jones went on to explain that it was developed not because there was an outstanding need for it but rather more because developers are looking to find those few untapped areas in the market.
The creators of the app, Brian Moore and Chris Baker ( the former creative director at viral news site Buzzfeed) discussed the nature of the app and how it has found a niche in the social media market. They
“Personally, I think we’ve seen the crest of the big social network,” Baker said when speaking with the Washington Post.
So, there seems to be a shift in the was social – or in this circumstance ‘Anti-Social’ – media is being used. Is this the start of the beginning of the end for popular sites/apps like Facebook & Instagram?
