Dresses Release Debut Album Sun Shy

There’s a new indie-pop band on the scene, Portland-based duo Dresses have managed the near impossible and delivered something different in this oversaturated genre. Timothy Heller and Jared Maldonado both provide quirky upbeat vocals that have a genuinely infectious playfulness to them. They’ve just released Sun Shy via SideOneDummy/Shock Records, and it’s definitely worth a listen.

The lyrics have a strong sense of story to them, ‘Back To Life’ is a tale of new love that will give any listener an optimism and newfound spring in their step, and slightly deeper topics are explored in ‘Tell A Lie’, which is about making every moment count. This duo are certainly embracing this message, each track is catchy and brings a different whimsical quality which makes this band stand out.

Timothy and Jared write their own material, and as a couple in real life, this might be the clinching factor which gives their music and lyrics an edge. The eclectic use of instruments, a ukulele, piano and guitar, lend a folk element that also helps set them apart. Whatever it is, these 21 year olds have produced something that’s appealing to fans of indie-pop and might also be a nice surprise for those not currently enamoured with the genre.
