Fiji Travel Guide
With turquoise lagoons, crystal clear water, friendly locals and a laid back vibe, Fiji is a true paradise. Travellers often head to nearby Thailand, but Fiji is less explored and has equally as much to offer. So, whether you’re planning to travel for a few months before going off to university or taking a sabbatical from a 9-5 career, it’s an ideal de-stress from everyday life.
Start your trip in beautiful Nadi on the main island of Viti Levu, where you can go for long walks on the beach and begin to relax straight off of the plane. Take a taxi or organised excursion to The Nature Park where you can see world-renowned orchids and other rare flowers and birds. Take your time enjoying this area of peace and quiet before sipping a deliciously refreshing drink. In the afternoon why not visit the Sri Siva Subramaniya, a grand and colourful Hindu Temple? This spectacular building boasts amazing architecture; you won’t be able to resist taking a picture for your Instragram. Inside is equally beautiful and a tour guide will be able to answer any of your questions about the artwork. Remember to wear long trousers and be respectful or you may be turned away.
Continue your journey to Sigatoka, a mere 70km away from Nadi. Sit outside and watch the sunset whilst sipping cocktails and sampling local delicacies. Stay the night at Namuka Bay Lagoon which is so close to the beach that you’ll be able to go to sleep listening to the sound of the waves lapping on the shore. The next morning, trek the 15km journey through the Sigatoka Valley to the Lawai Pottery Village. You can meet local people, experience local customs and witness a Kava Ceremony, where you can sample a traditional ground root drink. Later in the day, go on a Cave Road Safari, where you can explore Fiji’s largest cave system including the Neihehe Cave, a former fortress for a cannibal tribe. You can explore this huge cave with flashlights and lanterns making for an eerie experience that you will never forget. Tours depart daily although they only take small groups and want this to remain a spiritual place so book well in advance so you don’t miss out.
Before leaving on the Yasawa Flyer to one of the offshore islands, don’t miss out on sandboarding on your belly down one of Sigatoka’s dunes. You will get sand in every orifice but feel like you are ten years old again! The island of Beqa is representative of all of Fiji’s islands. You can try your hand at fishing, kayaking or snorkelling within the crystal clear waters that are said to rival that of The Great Barrier Reef, and you can see spinner dolphins, manta rays, green turtles and even sharks. Once you’re exhausted beyond measure, head up the beach and treat yourself to a massage and freshly made pina colada.
Fiji really is a paradise with something for everyone; from adrenaline fuelled rafting to relaxing walks and snoozing on the beach. Picturesque Fiji is made up of approximately 320 islands, of which one hundred or so are populated, so why not explore them all!
