Fraser Island tours Tips for 4WD Driving
Planning on a 4WD tour of the world’s largest sand island? Brave – yes you are, but the fun and adventures you’ll have far outweigh any worries. Here’s a for tips for 4WD driving on Fraser Island.
4 Wheel Drive
It may sound a little obvious, but AWD does not mean 4WD. If you want to have a hope in hell of getting around Fraser Island, you will need a 4WD. So make sure your vehicle is suitable before heading to the Island.
Drop Your Tire Pressure
Ok – a bit of a technical one, but dropping your tire pressure to between 18 and 20 psi will help you when it comes to driving on sand. It effectively helps spread your wheels a bit more, so you’ll have better traction.
Stock Up
When driving on uneven terrain in the heart of paradise, it’s extremely important that you have recovery gear. Don’t expect anyone else to bail you out if you get in trouble, as it’s every man for themselves, (although people may be willing to help, you need to be self-sufficient in case you’re in a remote area) so don’t head off on your Fraser Island 4WD tour without a snatch strap, shovel, wheel tracks and spare tire of course!
Getting Stuck
Also known as “getting bogged”. This can happen when driving on sand, so if it does, remember to not panic, take your time and follow the necessary steps. Take your foot off the accelerator straight away, try and reverse over the same track if you can, then move forward. Hopefully you’ll ease on through and be back up and running before you know it.
Keep an Eye on the Tide
Ok, so it’s super exciting the prospect of driving along 75 mile beach looking badass in your 4X4, but you do need to keep an eye on the tides. When taking to the beaches its advisable to drive during low tides and to avoid getting caught up in the swell. Your car will thank you for keeping it as dry as possible underneath!
