Future Music Festival, Brisbane 2012It’s 8am, Saturday 3rd March and the Sun is starting to shine across the skyline of Brisbane as ravers both Australian and International roamed the streets of the city-entering bottle-o’s and shouting festival carnage after one another. As midday approaches, the rain falls heavily, the streets are filled with taxis and said festivalgoers are looking slightly messier. However the rain doesn’t kill the electric atmosphere at the entrance gates to the Racecourse.

Professor Green plays a solid warm-up set on entrance to the Festival, at this point the crowd gives up the ‘clean-look’ and friends are thrown face down, belly flopping into the mud pits and then stomping to the beat as Chase&Status enter the main stage. The respect from the crowd was mind-blowing as the London doom smashed some golden oldies such as Eastern Jam and End Credits. Mud was flying as the bass became heavier; the only problem was the levels of the speakers, which should have been increased twofold. Heading to a more intimate part of the festival- Oliver Huntemann played some soulful minimal tech, which made the crowd melt(along with the crew in wet suits who were throwing some serious shapes).

Vodkas and energy drinks were being drunk across the festival site as if they were heading out of fashion. Every beefy agro boy in Australia (minus a skinny vest)seemed to be strutting across the site and entering the foam party stage where sadly Cotton Eyed Joe was being dropped much to a huge sense of disbelief shown from us.

As the sunset into the mud, FatBoy Slim was where things really went off! Insane visuals and that cheeky knowing look from Norman had the crowd going off the hook. With the sounds of ‘Praise You’ hanging in the air from start to finish- FatBoy looked on as high as a kite dropping classics and new songs throughout his set. He rolled across the floor to the beat and seemed to play tunes, which he thought would please the crowd more than his signature sound which disappointed somewhat.

However, no love was lost for Norman as he played in a mask of his own face; his set was still one to remember. The crowd was becoming a sweat pit as FatBoy Slim’s set came to an end and the projections became freakier than macho men dancing to Cotton Eyed Joe. The three Swedes kept the crowd waiting for thirty minutes before appearing into the lights of the main stage- perfectly timed as the heavens opened dropping the most blissful pearls of heaven into the thousands of wasted heads in the crowd.

The production was some of the best witnessed at a festival with fireworks, ice cannons, lazers which blew everyone’s mind and the Swedish trio’s smash hits being blown into the sky- the rain made the moment that little bit more perfect. Sven Vath and Paul Van Dyk’s names were commented on with goosebumps as the crowd wobbled through the mud and gathered onto the bus, specifically labeled ‘special’- as chants were again thrown across the deck back to the CBD where it all started. Future Music- BBM salutes you.
