Hot Chip – Why Make Sense?
Having signed to Domino Records for their previous effort, Hot Chip made the progression from less machine-driven dance sounds into more earthy and disco tinged atmospherics with their unique brand of geek-chic, neo-soul electronica and they are continuing this trend with their outstanding new album ‘Why Make Sense?’.
Championing clubs and festival dance tents throughout their glittering fifteen year career, Hot Chip are making strides into the heady heights of headlining slots, capturing their live energy on record with the naturally recorded drum beats which could possibly inspired by the success of Daft Punk’s 2013 global nu-disco phenomenon ‘Get Lucky’ and could definitely elevate Hot Chip into the international mainstream consciousness.
The insatiably funky ‘Started Right’ is driven by smooth keys and a grinding bass line that could easily be lifted from an 80s Stevie Wonder track, whilst the joyous ‘Love Is The Future’ would fit perfectly on a late-night love songs playlist if it were curated by French-electro peers Soulwax.
Lead single and album opener ‘Huarache Lights’ conveys singer Alexis Taylor’s enjoyment of playing live, preaching the lyrics “I know every single we play tonight will make the people just bathe in the light” through distorted electronic talkbox effects whilst the track euphorically ascends throughout it’s near six-minute duration with the crunchy keyboard riff and infectious jazz-tinged beat.

In support of their new LP, Hot Chip will tour the US and Europe this May and June as well headlining Sonar in Barcelona and Green Man Festival later in the summer.
