How to Get a Job in Nursing if You Are Not an Australian From the 2014 report published by the Australian Department of Health, it is predicted that by 2025, there will be a significant shortage of nursing staff. Hence, employing foreign nurses have become a popular practice. In this process, it has paved the way for creating a lot of opportunities for non-Australian nurses.

There are 3 steps which must be followed in order to work as a nurse in Australia.

1. Meeting the requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
2. Submission of the application for Registration with AHPRA.
3. Getting a visa.

How to Get a Job in Nursing if You Are Not an Australian Meeting the requirements of the AHPRA

In this process, there are 5 criteria which are considered when assessing the application.

1. Establishing identity by providing proof of identity documents.
2. Meeting the Enligsh language proficiency standards.

In this process, either the International English 7 Language Testing System (IELTS) examination or the Occupation English Test (OET) must be passed. In terms of IELTS,

a minimum band score of 7 in all listening, reading, writing and speaking components must be there. In terms of OET, the above components must be completed with either an A or a B grade.

1. Meeting Australian nursing and midwifery education standards.
2. Providing evidence of having practiced as a nurse within a defined period of time prior to submitting the application.
3. Demonstrating the capability of working in Australia.
   In this process, the following things are considered.
   1. Previous proven disciplinary proceedings.
   2. Restrictions governed by mental incapacity.
   3. Restrictions governed by mental incapacity.
   4. Criminal history.

Submission of the application for Registration with AHPRA.

After the requirements of the AHPRA are fulfilled, the application must be submitted to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia for the registration process.

Getting a visa.

Once registered with the AHPRA, a visa must be obtained for working in Australia.
