interview with DJ G-Wizard
interview with DJ G-Wizard DJ G-Wizard has played for Usher, Snoop Dogg and Nelly. He’s just mixed a new album with DJ Def Rok and managed to take some time out of his busy schedule to talk with BBM.
interview with DJ G-Wizard What was it like working with Def Rok?
Awesome. This’ll be like the fourth release that I’ve worked on with him. He’s the most easy going DJs I’ve worked with. These compilations are a challenge as they involve everything from drafting the songs, submitting the list to the labels and choosing the right tracks before we actually mix them. And we’re both heavily involved right from beginning to end.
How do you choose what tracks to include for each record you do?
Well this specific one is really a token of where R & B artists have taken their music so there’s a lot of up-tempo stuff, real pop-sounding stuff. Everything that’s coming out is sort fusing the dichotomies of house music and R & B. R & B today is so different that what we first worked on. It’s really artistic.
Are you still doing the production side of things as well?
Yeah I run a studio so by day I’m producing radio ads as well as creating beats. But this CD is just an opportunity to get out nation wide and do all the launches and get involved.
What do you prefer, the behind-the-scenes work or your live gigs?
I like a balance of both. The weekends are gigs so you just travel heaps so it’s sort of nice coming home and back to the studio and knowing I can do something totally different.
Do you think the scenes are different from state to state?
Yeah I think they are. You go to some places where it’s real real poppy and the nightclubs are commercial so you just please the crowd. Then there are places where they really understand the culture and the music.
You must be so busy.
Yeah if I look at my calendar and there’s a blank spot I know I need to fill it in.
