Travelling from Darwin to Alice Springs is almost like a right of passage when visiting Australia on a gap year or working holiday, after all, we must visit the most famous Australian icon after Sydney Opera House, the great and majestic Uluru.
Setting off from the Northern Territory capital of Darwin, you can take two days to make your way to Alice Springs (the gateway to Uluru). But there’s so much to see along the way, you’ll be glad for taking your time to get there.
Edith Falls is a must-visit to break up your journey. Located on the western side of Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge), you’ll be confronted by stunning clear pools in which to cool off from the Northern Territory heat. Swim up to the cascading waterfall as it pours into the pool below, but make sure you get someone to take a photo, as this is a fantastic opportunity for a few holiday snaps.
Next up is the Mataranka Thermal Springs, where you can slip into soothing pool of natural hot springs, fantastic if you’re a little stiff from all the travelling. The natural pool is spring-fed and remains at a pretty constant 34 C all year round.
Before reaching Alice Springs you will pass another rather impressive geological site – the aptly named ‘Devils Marbles’ or known to the Aboriginals as Karlu Karlu. The Devils Marbles are of great cultural and spiritual significance to the Aboriginal land owners, and the reserve where they are found protects one of the oldest religious sites in the whole world, as well as the large round boulders. The reserve was officially passed back to the traditional owners at a ceremony in 2008, but you can still visit their enormous round rocks that litter the expansive scenery.
