Lakuta Release Debut Single ‘Bata Boy’.
Out 1st July, ‘Bata Boy’ is the debut single from Lakuta,
The single precedes Lakuta’s debut album ‘Brothers and Sisters’, which is due to drop in August, and is produced by the highly respected Nick Faber. ‘Bata Boy’, the lead single for the album, is a bubbling afrobeat number which will be released alongside two remixes; a funky rework from Steve Cobby and a debonair dub cut from Tru Thoughts label-mate Wrongtom.
Lakuta is fronted by the fierce duo of Tanzanian-Kenyan vocalist Siggi Mwasote and percussionist and songwriter Cicely Taylor. Before joining the band, Siggi grew up singing in choirs and even has experience singing with the revered English National Opera. Cicely’s classical background and penchant for Cuban, Brazilian and Ghanaian music has been the driving force behind her musical passions. The name of the band actually originates from Siggi’s mother tongue and translates from Swahili to mean ‘to find, meet, share or feel full’.
‘Bata Boy’ is opened by the distinctive thud of the Cuban bata trio who play the ‘Chachalokefun’ rhythm, setting a fast pace which will be sure to lift your mind and body. Siggi’s soulful vocals call out against sexual prejudice, small-mindedness and hypocrisy and are met by an infectious horn hook and choral uprising. Cobby, who’s no stranger to reworking a track for a dancefloor, infuses the tropical cut with a house driven wiggle on his version of the track. While Wrongtom adds his magic touch by stripping back the Latin rhythms to reveal a laid back roots-reggae beat in his remix of ‘Bata Boy’. In the lead up to the release of their debut album, ‘Brothers and Sisters’, the group are currently readying themselves for a jam packed summer playing plenty of gigs and festivals including: The Great Escape and Haslemere Fringe & Forgotten Fields either as a full-live band or in a stripped back 6-piece acoustic set.
