Interview with Lancelot

LancelotStep into the world of music with an exclusive interview featuring Lancelot. Make way for Lancelot, as this guy throws his mortarboard into the skies. Down fall some top tracks more than worth your ear-time. This guy is a breath of fresh air from the lights of Sydney city. His sound is chilled, yet organized- easy to listen to, yet structured- I guess that’s the classical training shining through. It’s hard to believe that Lancelot hasn’t been producing for long; his sound is well beyond his years. Here, BBM’s Frankie Salt chats classics, birds and enchanted gardens…

Good evening Lancelot, how are you mate?
Yeah I’m good thank you

So how has the past year been for you?
It’s been really good; everything has kicked off so much even in the last three weeks. I’ve just finished university and everything is so exciting and I’ve just been able to just focus purely on this Lancelot thing as far as I want to. So yeah I just graduated from the Sydney conservatorium of music writing classical orchestral music and things like that.

Very cool, when did you begin to start producing and Djing?
I started producing music about two years ago electronically. I’ve always kind of mucked around with guitars and bands.

Did you always know this was what you wanted to do?
To be honest, I started producing before I started DJIng. I’ve only been DJing very recently, say five months ago. With the whole Lancelot project, I haven’t had chance to completely put my feet to the ground due to other commitments until the last six months. And yeah I’ve come along way.

Wow, that must be mind-blowing mate.
Yeah it’s insane, its all happened very quickly. I definitely can’t complain.

Yeah I haven’t been here long in Sydney myself, but I’ve been hearing your name pop up about town, I heard you on the radio at work today, which was very cool.
(Laughing) yeah that is very cool…

In the past who inspired you to create your own sound? Was this something you always knew you wanted to do?
Well to be honest, through high school, I was into sport. My big ambition was to play professional baseball. But I was told that I was too small. So I was like ‘oh damn’-and so I found a new passion throughout my baseball journey, which was music. My first inspiration was rock stuff like Thrice and then I grew up and turned 18 and got into electronic music. People like Midnight Juggernauts and The Presets and they touched everyone around the world with their stuff. They inspired me so much. Yeah I then I developed again and since starting DJing I have had to listen to so much more stuff from England, America, people like Moon boots and the French express stuff.

How would you describe your own music?
Oh this is always so hard… I don’t know. I’m classically trained so I would like to think that my music is thought out by no one but myself and I want to like my music. And this is how I like it. By making it my own little complication that I can figure out for myself.

I like that, so you say your sound is organized? Would you say that your sets are well thought out and you know the progressions or do you just feed off of the crowd in the moment?

It completely matters what kind of gig is. So like for me EP launch I had a strong idea of what I wanted to play. My mixes had to be in key, along with the more musical technical side of things. But if it’s a party set it’s all a 100% vibe from the crowd, giving them what they want but in my fashion and style. I want people to enjoy what they’re hearing.

Do you have three tracks at the moment, which you can’t stop listening to?
Always, completely stuck in my head yeah ‘Bills to pay’ by Moon Boots, Kraak & Smaak – Hold back Love feat. Lex Empress (Lovebirds Remix) and erm… oh yeah definitely Inspector Norse the original mix, Todd Terje.

I guess this is what we were saying before, you grow up and your taste change, but with me this often happens from week to week and my head becomes engrossed…

Yeah well the life expectancy of a dance track is constantly changing and evolving from particular tracks because this form of arts is one in a million and this doesn’t happen with the other arts. I think that’s because other forms are slower. It’s very exciting. It’s like a double-edged sword. It’s a good and bad thing I guess but you know. bleh (laughing)

Yeah I totally agree… do you have some classics that you could never get bored of too? Something’s never change, I can never get enough of some trance from years back…

Classic dance tracks? The pants dance 2011 volume one. Doctor Dru – Juicy Fruit (Calm Down Winter Bootleg) …is an awesome track…

Yeah everyone has to have at least one classic! (Laughing) Tell me a weird fact about yourself…
Ok, you know how when people whistle they have to blow out? I have to blow in!

Me too (laughing)… and when people whistle using their fingers and stuff? That shits crazy. It’s a talent in itself…

Yeah what’s a musician, when you can do that eh?

So if you could be an animal what animal would you be?
I would be a bird for sure, 100%… like an Albatross or something. You know, giant ones, which swim across oceans with 10 metre wingspans. What are they called?

It begins with an ‘a’ I’m sure of it.. I think you’re right. I think I would be a monkey. They’re too cool.
I would have to be a bird though. Flying would be amazing.

When can I come catch you in action? Are you playing in Sydney soon?
Yeah I got some gigs a lot of the time in Sydney. The big gig is on Saturday, March 17th with my two mates, we are called the ‘Be Sharps’- (laughing)-it’s a joke, we had to come up with a ridiculous name. You should see our logo- a home job, it looks like it’s worth about 30 cents. Secret Garden festival is set in stages surrounded by beautiful bush and is in a secret location with a very small crowd not too far from Sydney near Camden. I had the best time ever last year.

Yeah we have a very similar thing back at home at the Secret Garden Party, similar vibe to how you describe the other festival. Ill definitely look into that.
Yeah that sounds very similar- Oh yeah and I’m playing Chinese Laundry on the 31st March too.

Chinese Laundry is always a winner. My friend Harry, or Midland as he is better known is playing there on the 21st April too so I’ve got so many dates to attend there. I will be there to see you play for sure!
Yeah I haven’t been there for a night out in such a long time, but it’s always a good night.

Ha-ha, and now you’re playing there! So you’re ready for 2012?
Oh year, bring it on, LPs, tours, production, so much to come.

Thanks mate, been a pleasure. See you at the Laundry.
Thanks Frankie. See you there.
