Live Review: Revomatix @ Ding Dong Lounge
The Ding Dong Lounge is Melbourne’s secret alternative hotspot. Down a small, dark alley in Chinatown, it cannot be stumbled across – you have to be cool enough to be introduced to it. The live music hub is home to gigs and club nights of all different genres, and on a Wednesday it hosts Melbourne’s newest Soul night, Mo’Soul. Open the inconspicuous red door, step up the stairs and step back in time to the secret soul of Melbourne.
June’s resident band Revomatix are on hand every Wednesday playing their original groove and funk. With eight members, the stage is overflowing with talent and most of the collective are surprisingly young for soul-sters. The highlight of their original tracks is ‘Funky Funky Melbourne,’ a tribute to the city, but they also supply a satisfactory amount of unique covers including ‘Tainted Love’, ‘Valerie’, and some interesting mash ups. Once the drinks are flowing, the sax has filled the room and the dance floor is filling, DJ Vince Peach and his soul sista Miss Goldie take over to continue the groove. If you fancy something different from the midweek blues, just as Ding Dong’s official site states, “Revomatix can keep your soul warm every night in June.”
