Luisa Omielan Am I Right Ladies?! Interview
With over 30 million views on YouTube for a joke on the infamous thigh gap, Luisa Omielan is returning to Australia in 2016 for her second comedy festival season. Spending two months Down Under from March to May, we caught up with her to find out what we can expect this time around.
You had your first taste of Australia’s comedy festival season in 2015. How was your experience?
I had the best time ever. I loved it. Australia is very laidback – maybe too laidback for my liking! It meant that, when I came back to London, I was relaxed about everything! It became a bit of a working holiday!
Your comedy style is a breath of fresh air; what was the audience reaction like to your fearless encouragement of self-love?
They were a bit reserved, actually! I was hoping they’d be a bit more up for it! This year, I’m hoping they’ll be a bit more up for it from the off!
Do you think Am I Right Ladies? will be able to do that?
Oh, yeah! If there’s a show that can do it it will be Am I Right? They responded so well to the thigh gap routine so if they like that they’re gonna love it!
With regards to the thigh gap routine, it’s been watched 30 million times on YouTube. With that amount of views, will you be doing the routine as it is or will you be mixing it up a bit?
No, it’s the routine as it is. It’s from the show and the video is an edited version so you get to see the full version live!
Ahh, so what’s the full version?
Well, you’ll have to come and see the show!
How have you found men to react to your stand-up?
They love it! A lot of men go, “Thank you! I love my girlfriend’s body exactly as she is and I wish she didn’t beat herself up so much.” They like the message and they don’t expect it, it’s nice.
Festival season means you’ll be spending about two months in Australia; what would you like to get up to this time?
I would like to go out a bit more – I didn’t go out much because it was stressful and quite full on. I’d like to see more of the sights, do some shopping – get my summer wardrobe! – and maybe go on some dates with local guys and girls to get shown around by people that are local to the area, rather than just being with other comedians. It would be nice to meet proper Aussies!
Will you be taking anything with you from the UK?
Maybe some PG Tips because I know you guys are good with your coffee but you can’t get a good cup of tea in Australia!
