Mystery Jets, Wheatus & Much More At The Corner This September

Follow us on Google News

The Corner in Melbourne has got an absolutely blinding September lined up, including Mystery Jets and Wheatus to name a mere two amazing nights on the line up! Check out below some of the great stuff in store at The Corner this month.

Barry Adamson (UK)

Tuesday 11th September 2012 8:00pm

Born in Manchester in 1958, and writing his first song at the age of 10, Barry Adamson was known to skip school and wait at home for the postman to deliver the latest Alice Cooper import from America. Home life was coated with the rhythms of motown and jazz, while Roxy Music and David Bowie shaped his teenage years. Recording five albums with Howard Devoto’s Magazine, he moved to London in the ‘80s, working with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds across three albums. Over time he began making a series of sketches and tunes that would become the trace elements of his erotic, paranoid style; densely portrayed in his debut solo album, ‘Moss Side Story’. Several albums later and Adamson is now set to release another, ‘I Will Set You Free’, featuring the song ‘Turnaround’, in 2012. Now free of the shackles of expectation, prepare to take a ride aboard one of the year’s finest releases. https://youtu.be/j80rPOybSms

Ingrid Michaelson (USA)

Thursday 13th September 2012 8:00pm

After a sold out 2010 Australian tour, New York native and quirky vocalist sensation target Ingrid Michaelson returns to our shores for her sophomore tour this September. Bringing along her uniquely endearing stage presence, self-deprecating humour, heartfelt lyrics and pristine vocals, Ingrid Michaelson is set to once again wow Australian audiences. Regularly compared to Feist and Regina Spektor, Ingrid’s impromptu tap-dancing, ukulele-playing and witty wordplay, this DIY darling makes even the biggest venues seem intimate. Ingrid recently released her latest album ‘Human Again’, which debuted at #5 on the US Billboard charts and #1 on US iTunes, and which sees the music veering from orchestral to percussive, and with darker, impassioned songs exploring a new, intricate and more fragile side to the singer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgfzm2aiUOo

Ticket: $49.00 ($3.00 bf)

VIP Meet and Greet Package: $149.00 ($5.00 bf)

Jonathan Wilson (USA)

Friday 14th September 2012 8:30pm

With warm, supple melodies and intricate instrumentation saturated in an earnest North Carolinian drawl, prepare to swoon when psychedelic singer-songwriter Jonathan Wilson embarks on a debut national tour of Australia. After a lengthy period of procrastination, working extensively with renowned artists such as Erykah Badu, Elvis Costello, Wilco and The Black Crowes, Wilson released his seminal debut album ‘Gentle Spirit’ in 2011. Not your archetypal singer-songwriter, it is a fascination with the unconventional and a deep-seeded adoration of 1960s LA that drive Wilson’s unique songwriting sensibilities. Inspired by the atmospheric guitar work and mellow vibrations of many of LA’s Laurel Canyon folk stars from the ‘60s and ‘70s, Jonathan Wilson’s music is lodged somewhere between Neil Young’s ‘Harvest’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’. Watch Wilson and his band play at last year’s Crossing Border Festival.

Ticket: $32.00 ($3.00 bf)

Saturday 15th September 2012 7:30pm

Now in its fourth year, Poison City’s annual Weekender fest is set to converge on Melbourne again this September for three days of friendship, punk-rock, bar hopping, hugs and high fives! The Corner is hosting this event among others around the city and this year the Melbourne record label has reached far and wide to assemble the event’s biggest line up yet! Heading up the festivities is none other than New York post-hardcore supergroup Rival Schools, returning to Australia for the first time since the release of their 2011 comeback album ‘Pedals’. Also making the journey down under for the first time is Philadelphia’s Restorations, whose recent ‘S/t’ debut continues to win the hearts of ‘older punks’ everywhere, their music being described as everything from angsty ‘90s indie-punk, to shoegaze to a melding of Lucero and Explosions In The Sky. They’ll be joined by The Smith Street Band, A Death In The Family (Final Show!), Extortion, Luca Brasi, I-Exist, Hoodlum Shouts, Jamie Hay, Grim Fandango, Milhouse, Jen Buxton, Between The Devil & The Deep, Outsiders (NZ), Let Me Down Jungleman, Chinese Burns Unit (members of Frenzal Rhomb, Lawnsmell, The Optionals), Toy Boats, Lincoln Le Fevre, Run Squirrel and White Walls, with more acts still to be announced! Eeath (USA)

Sunday 16th September 2012 7:30pm

Heathen Skulls is proud to present Seattle drone doom outfit Earth in their very first performances on our shores this September. Earth formed in 1990 and led by guitarist Dylan Carlson. Mostly instrumental, their early work grew out of the Seattle area grunge scene and is recognised as pioneering the genre of drone doom – an experimental offshoot of doom metal, characterised by droning, minimalist, lengthy and repetitive structures. Their early work could be seen as a variation of the experimental doom-influenced metal of The Melvins but they now feature a markedly different sound. Released earlier this year, ‘Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light II’ is a completely unanticipated direction for Earth. They are heartfelt, haunting and deliver slow moving music that stretches into other worlds. https://vimeo.com/13217977

Newton Faulkner (UK)

Tuesday 18th September 2012 8:00pm

Hot off the heels of his third studio album, ‘Write It On Your Skin’, Newton Faulkner will be making his anticipated return to Australia for a string of intimate club shows this September, including this event. Having previously toured Australia in theatres on the main stage at major music festivals, these shows are a rare opportunity to experience this incredible artist in intimate venues. Releasing ‘Write It On Your Skin’ this year, the album is bristling with spontaneity, the best kind of DIY imagination, and songs from unlikely sources but with a very likely-lad appeal. To date their first record has sold more than five million copies worldwide. Any manager or record label would be happy to tout those stats to the press but Wheatus have remained unsigned and unmanaged for the last eight years. Wheatus continue to write, record and tour 15 years after their inception, having released five studio albums since 2000 and currently in pre-production for their sixth. Nada Surf (USA)

Friday 21st September 2012 8:30pm

After almost a decade, legendary New York rockers Nada Surf are finally returning to Australian shores to celebrate not only the recent release of their seventh full-length record, ‘The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy’, but also their entire back catalogue for the first time ever. Their name tirelessly transcends their 1996 summer anthem ‘Popular’ alongside a discography of what many describe as perfect indie-pop/rock. Forming in 1994, ‘Popular’ from their first full length studio album ‘High/Low’, became a summer anthem across the globe. With a whirlwind tri-state tour including Sydney’s the Annandale Hotel, the famous Spiegeltent as part of Brisbane Festival and, of course, the Corner, the band is promising a set list pulled from their 16 year, seven album career. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNc45FTenhg

Mia Dyson (album tour)

Saturday 22nd September 2012 8:30pm

Australian blues and roots stalwart Mia Dyson is bringing her stunning guitar playing, smoky, sultry voice and enviable ability to tell a story through song, back to Australia, having been living in the USA for some time now. Writers have gushed about her whisky-tinged voice and compared her to Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan and the Boss. Now Mia is returning to Australia with a new album under her wing called ‘The Moment’, which was funded by her fans using the Pledge Music service. The first official single from the album, ‘When The Moment Comes’, veers away from the blues and roots we once knew her for but shows Mia has lost none of her songwriting prowess. Pond

World conquering psych rock fun makers Pond are back to inflict freakin’ good times on the good folk of Sydney and Melbourne with a couple of headline shows in September. Recently named “hottest new band in the world” by NME and jaw-droppingly good live, Pond are heading back to – well, somewhere – to record what may turn out to be an EP or an album, which could be called ‘Hobo Rocket’ or ‘Man It Feels Like Space Again’. Either way, you’ll be the first to hear these new tunes live at what could be their last headline shows in Australia this year Stream Pond’s latest single, ‘Moth Wings’, here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6cSvOfwxQs

Marianas Trench (Canada)

For the first time in Australia, Canada’s pop punk quartet Marianas Trench will hit the stage for a trio of headline shows this September. Following the earlier announcement of their appearance at Fat As Butter, Marianas Trench will play this headline sideshow. This year has already been a good year for the Vancouver locals with the success of their first single lifted from ‘Ever After’, their third studio album release. ‘Haven’t Had Enough’ sparked radio plays and was added to MTV’s Most Wanted list in Australia, and went to #1 on the iTunes charts in their hometown. The second single, ‘Fallout’, is already a platinum selling hit in North America. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHyYzezYWe0

Mystery Jets (UK)

Wednesday 26th September 2012 8:00pm

London based group Mystery Jets return to Australia in support of new album, ‘Radlands’. Mystery Jets have already been announced on the gigantic Fat As Butter Festival lineup, and have now announced headline shows around the country. Hailing from West London and three albums down the line, Mystery Jets have accrued success in abundance with their own quirky pop sound. Their fourth album, ‘Radlands’, saw the band relocate to Austin, Texas for the recording, which was co-produced by the band and Dan Carey (Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand, Emiliana Torrini). The ‘Radlands’ title is a reference to Terrence Malick’s 1973 film, ‘Badlands’, and Keith Richard’s Sussex estate, ‘Redlands’. With UK press calling it “their boldest and most fantastically frisky record to date” (The Fly) and local publication FasterLouder likening it to “the sweetness of The Thrills meets Neil Young”, this is an album tour not to miss. Watch the video for ‘Someone Purer’ from ‘Radlands’ here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcQ-lAyTvYs

Ticket: $44.00 ($3.00 bf)

Defeater (USA) and Blacklisted (USA)

Thursday 27th September 2012 7:30pm

In what could be one of the worst kept secrets of 2012 we can now confirm Massachusetts band Defeater will indeed be returning to Australia this September just over a year since they were here last. Defeater will be joined by none other than Philadelphia’s ever evolving Blacklisted, touring Australia for the first time since 2008. Defeater are a band that play by their own rules; they write narrative songs about fictional characters, release concept albums, mix melodic hardcore with acoustic ballads – all the while tapping into issues such as social awareness and environmental activism. Since their formation over four years ago, Defeater have released two albums and an EP all following a story-telling song writing style. Equally as individual as their tour partners and existing as a potent amalgam of individual tastes and varied interests, Blacklisted have shaken off the perceived limitations of their alleged genre and begun their own ascension. Their sound is no clichéd exercise in the well-worn realm of post-hardcore. It is no less than the melody of a band hitting its stride and not looking back. Watch the video for ‘Empty Glass’ by Defeater here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXymqDN6qPg&feature=plcp

Ticket: $35.00 ($3.00 bf)

Russian Circles (USA) with Eagle Twin (USA)

Friday 28th September 2012 8:30pm

After unleashing their monumental sounds to packed houses across the country last year, experimental metal outfit Russian Circles are back on our shores this September and are bringing Utah duo Eagle Twin along for the ride. Hailing from the windy city of Chicago, Russian Circles have been making their mark on the international underground since 2004. Starting with their self-titled, self-released debut EP, Russian Circles have gone onto critical acclaim by recording numerous singles and split releases, not to mention three full length albums. Although Eagle Twin is a new entity, its helmsman Gentry Densley is no stranger to innovative, heavy music. Densley was the musical visionary and leader of the legendary jazz, prog, rock, metal, hardcore group Iceburn from 1991-2001. In order to disseminate his majestic and mountainous riffs in the present day, he enlisted massively behemoth skinsman Tyler Smith, and the result is doom/blues/roots/rock backing a new mythology of epic, Old Testament proportions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2-hJtJrXxc

Ticket: $35.00 ($3.00 bf)

Guests: TBA

Seth Sentry (‘This Was Tomorrow Album Tour’)

Saturday 29th September 2012 8:30pm

The debut album from Melbourne MC Seth Sentry will be unleashed on September 14 and he’s setting out on tour to celebrate. The album, ‘This Was Tomorrow’, is a ground breaking and utterly relatable hip-hop masterpiece. From the incredible success of ‘The Waitress Song’ to the current radio smash singles ‘My Scene’ and the album is indicative of the exponential rate at which Australian hip-hop is evolving. Bold, atmospheric and almost orchestral; it is a grand and ambitious gesture from a humble and entirely creative artist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeOhaxoXVXk&feature=player_embedded

Ticket: $20.00 ($3.00 bf)

Guests: Grey Ghost
